What Edmunds Says

With sharp styling and performance to match, the 2014 BMW M6 Gran Coupe adds two more doors to what is already one of the best touring cars on the market.

Pros

Exceptionally powerful engine; responsive dual-clutch automated manual transmission; wide range of comfort and performance settings; roomy front seats.

Cons

Like the M6 coupe and convertible, the four-door will likely feel big and heavy on tight roads.

What's New for 2014

The 2014 BMW M6 Gran Coupe is an all-new model.

Introduction

Joining the recently redesigned M6 coupe and convertible models, the 6 Series Gran Coupe is BMW's next model to get the M treatment. At first glance, the 2014 BMW M6 Gran Coupe sedan doesn't look much different from its two-door coupe counterpart. The Gran Coupe has the same flared fender arches, aggressive front end and carbon-fiber roof panel. But of course it does have those two rear doors, as well as a 4.5-inch longer wheelbase, just like the regular Gran Coupe.

The M6 Gran Coupe is identical under the hood, though. That means a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 that makes 560 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque, put to the ground through a seven-speed automated manual transmission with shift paddles, an electronic rear differential and several different dynamic drive modes. BMW says the Gran Coupe can sprint from zero to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, which sounds right; we tested an M6 Convertible that did it in 4.2 seconds.

Expect the same premium interior materials inside the lush cabin, along with front seats offering plenty of power adjustment and racecar-like lateral support. The iDrive electronics interface, anchored by a 10.2-inch display, manages the varied M6 Gran Coupe systems, but some may find it more complicated than competitors. When we finally drive the Gran Coupe, we'll learn whether or not the Low-Speed Assistance function addresses one of our recent complaints with big BMWs: delayed throttle response around town.

The 2014 BMW M6 Gran Coupe goes on sale this summer. BMW will announce final specs, EPA fuel economy estimates and pricing closer to launch, and we expect the Gran Coupe to carry a $10,000-$15,000 premium over the M6 Coupe, which starts around $108,000.
