Porsche in a Tuxedo
Vehicle
2007 BMW M5 4dr Sedan (5.0L 10cyl 7AM)
Review
This is a 4 door race car. Performance and handling are as good as the Porsche I used to own. The difference is that this is an everyday driver. I don't understand the complaints about the iDrive. With a little effort, I find it very intuitive. The SMG is the same - with some experience, it becomes second nature.
Favorite Features
Bluetooth and voice command are great. Seats are very comfortable. The active seats are a nice touch for extra cornering support. Overall aggressive styling may be copied by lesser vehicles, but the engine and suspension are unique and the best.
Suggested Improvements
Interior could be improved (Audi has the lead here).

Performance Only
Vehicle
2007 BMW M5 4dr Sedan (5.0L 10cyl 7AM)
Review
The car's performance is better than those exotics like Ferrari and Lambo and Porsches. What I mean by performance is not just acceleration handling and braking, it includes family hauling, grocery shopping and everyday driving. Try hauling a baby seat with a Ferrari or Lambo. Try grocery shopping with a Porsche. In that means plus great handling, face numbing acceleration and you have the M5. It is my 2nd M5 and I love it. Although not as much as my previous M5 for fun-to-drive, or my neighbor's Honda CR-V for grocery shopping, but I love it, I love it, I love it
Favorite Features
SMG is great once you get used to, performance of engine, sound of engine, stealthy look of it. Too many to note.
Suggested Improvements
This car had some problems with burning engine oil for the first 3000 miles. Brakes feel lazy compared to other performances.

Fun but expensive to own

2007 BMW M5 4dr Sedan (5.0L 10cyl 7AM)
Review
Owned this car for almost a year now. It is my fifth BMW and first M car. Other BMWs had no reliability problems and fairly good performance. This car is all performance and no reliability. First 2000 miles in the break-in period, it consumed a quart of engine oil every 100 miles. It seemed like it ran on engine oil and not gasoline. I had problems with transmission (SMG), tire allignment, and driver's window. But I don't know if any other car can match this car's performance, practicality and fun to drive. It is stealthy enough to not attract too much attention, and yet it is powerful enough to street race a Porsche non turbo. Love this car, will buy again when the new model comes out.
Favorite Features
SMG is slow but fun and effective. Looks are great, acceleration is awesome, razorblade like handling, 5 seat, four door practicality, nice enough trunk space for at least two golf bags (more may fit but haven't tried). The iDrive has improved since my past 5-series.
Suggested Improvements
Fuel economy is terrible, computer reads 10 mpg average in 70% city, 30% hwy driving. Every part in this car costs double compared to regular 5 series, even the horn costs extra. Reliability is probably comparable to Ferraris and Lambos. Never get in a fenderbender because it will cost a fortune.

Review
This is a great performance sedan, huge power and handling and braking capabilities when wanted, and easy docile cruiser otherwise. Wonderful exhaust note. Eye catching style/color, rare, and fine. 6 speed manual is state of the art, smooth, accurate, and fun. Gas mileage can be either OK or terrible, your results will depend on how often you dip into the high rpm full throttle antics. 20 hwy is doable with some restraint. Some minor nit picks but overall a great car, and great value even at the lofty price. A bit heavy, but solid.
Favorite Features
Nav, bluetooth, Heads-Up display, park distance control f/r, comfort access, very nice. 500 HP. Smooth user friendly 6 speed.
Suggested Improvements
Park distance on/off could be on steering wheel. Trunk release button could be less of a reach.
Buyer Beware

Review
Buyer beware: Theres a reason for all those mediocre reviews out there in the automotive press. In truth, many of the reviews sound as though the writers think even less of the car than what they actually write, but are reluctant to bash a car with the reputation of the M5. Well that reputation was built from the first three US models. This one is fundamentally different. This is a Mercedes posing as a BMW. Its all about speed and comfort and lacks the handling of the earlier cars. Its very heavy and you feel every pound. It about cruising; not about flogging down a twisty road in the countryside. You feel disconnected from the road, there is no sense of immediacy on turn in.

Every bit of feedback is filtered through a layer of electronics. This is my fourth M car and the first one I am really disappointed in.

Probably the only car you can store your golf clubs (it comes with an illustration for 4 bags), bag cart or baby stroller at the same time. Great amenities such as window shades, adaptive headlights, etc. Five people fit nicely although the rear folks will be crowded. Nice exhaust note, lines. Gas mileage and transmission is another story.
Favorite Features
Sportiness meets utility. Inconspicuous, high performance sports car. Techie features (bluetooth, iPod connector, heads up, iDrive).
Suggested Improvements
Gas mileage: 11.8 MPG? The iPod interface is difficult to navigate to a specific song or artist if you have many stored. The GPS nav is extremely slow - maybe it's normal in other cars, but I counted 4 seconds load/refresh time of streets, etc.
Little disappointed

This was one of the first 6 speed MT cars in the US and I have to admit I was pretty angry to find out the traction control could not be turned off; no one told me this ahead of time. This is not in keeping with the M car concept. I don't know if this approach is an attempt to save the driveline or save drivers from themslves but either way, this should have been made clear BEFORE the car got to the US. I don't think I would have bought it if I had known. Otherwise the car is very well appointed and fun to drive. Handling even without EDC on is very good. Brakes are outstanding. Can't get over 12 mpg no matter how I drive, but what can you expect from a car like this?
Favorite Features
M button. Brakes are superb. Seats are excellent.
Suggested Improvements
Get rid of the non-defeatable traction control! Go back to the old key system; why turn a simple one step motion (turning off the car) into a slow, three step process? Exterior styling still needs work. Replacing the CD changer with an iPod adaptor is a rip-off.

I had a 545, and this is nothing like it. Way better gadgets. Improved navigation, heads up display is great, seats are much better and the acceleration is a great. The transmission is my favorite. Not for the wimpy driver.

Gas mileage, but everything comes with a price.

The M5 is a legal race car. So many things to love about this car. It is also an eye catcher, mine is Indi-red exterior and red interior, very sharp! The SMG does take a little to get use to, but does give the car a racing feel. Oh, and the exhaust note is heaven.
Favorite Features
Great stereo, heads up display and the exhaust note.
Suggested Improvements
I can't imagine how they can improve on the baby!
