I have owned several M3s, and liked them all. This is my first M5. Getting older I was looking for a more power and great handling but when not in the mood a little more comfort with the convenience of auto transmission in traffic. It tries to accomplishes all this but this is where it is flawed as it can't be a master of everything. At slow speeds the SMG is dimwitted. It doesn't react as quick as a manual and you can be beaten of the lights unless your on your game. Gear changes can be brutal when in attack mode. However I love it - the challenge you face is to know the car, set it up the way you want it and adapt to its shortcomings.Gives it a unique character.
I find the car a real kick in the pants to drive. It is refined when called for but hit the m button and hold on . What a monster. But this car is the most precise and accurate steering car I have ever driven. It corners like it is on rails. Roll into a tight turn and Punch it and it just hunkers down, rolls out on azimuth, and jumps out like somebody kicked it from behind. Lots of cool cars on the street with wicked exhausts. But you can take em in this car. If you have turn nothing but a pure supercar can keep up. The transmission takes a little getting used to but bottom line. I love it! Acceleration is smooth, fast and predictable.
Handling and accuracy of the steering. The ability to take a turn flat at high speed and roll out on course with no correction or understeer is exhilarating. I have yet to push this car hard enough to get it do anything but deliver. It kinda makes you wanna test the laws of physics.
Mileage awful, when I first noticed the mileage I was getting was the first time I stopped smiling. A moment later I punched it and started smiling again. If you watch the gas gauge you are going to depress yourself. So just drive it like you stole it.
Picked up a low mileage 07 M5 after reading some tough reviews on fuel economy and terrible SMG transmission. Don't beleive them! This car is a drivers fantasy car...the motor and transmission are incredible and smooth, you just need to invest some time and figure it out. I am getting 19mpg sriving 80mph with "power on"...it'll go from 50 to 100 fater than I can write it, the paddles/F1 shifiting is perfect. I have a 911 and a CayenneTurbo...love them both - this is better. If you love to drive, find one of these M5's and own it. Also helps if your brother is a state trooper, you will get in trouble, promise.
too many to list - the motor / SMG combination is off the hook. I lucked out and got a sport pacakge model - full leather makes a huge difference in the comfort
several imnprovments on the iDrive display but not the mechinism itself...people complain about iDrive, liek the car just need to figure it out and it becomes very intuitive.
Too heavy, not a precise and agile M car as its forebears were. Most of the performance is completely unusable in daily driving. Prepare to be beat at every stoplight unless you are really on it. I think J. Clarkson said it best: completely annoying until you hit the M button. Too bad you can't use that button for 95% of your driving; meaning you will have a really annoying car for 95% of the time you are driving. Sold mine a bought Porsche: a massive improvement in just about every way.
Was going to say nice paint job, then found out on trade in the trunk had a greater paint thickness than the rest of the car; meaning BMW had damaged the car and repainted it. The net effect was a potential (talked them out if it) reduction in the value of the car. Thanks BMW.
Appalling idrive; 8 menus to change the fan speed, are you joking BMW? Get rid of it! Leather showing wear after 5000 miles; materials are not BMW normal standard. Agricultural noises on start up.
This is a 4 door race car. Performance and handling are as good as the Porsche I used to own. The difference is that this is an everyday driver. I don't understand the complaints about the iDrive. With a little effort, I find it very intuitive. The SMG is the same - with some experience, it becomes second nature.
Bluetooth and voice command are great. Seats are very comfortable. The active seats are a nice touch for extra cornering support. Overall aggressive styling may be copied by lesser vehicles, but the engine and suspension are unique and the best.
Interior could be improved (Audi has the lead here).
