This is exactly what happened to my 1993 bmw 740il. Did you ever determine the answer. I haven't dug into it, but it sounds like the same issue. Started slowly taking longer to start, and then one day nothing at all. I too changed the spark plugs and noted that they were a bit wet with what apppeared to be oil, but had a gas smell to them. This may be a dealer only item and I'm not sure they even have a 7 series beyond 1994 (E32). It's not a car most people work on themselves, so probably not enough demand. Bentley Publishing does the best job for German cars but they only have BMW 3 and 5 series for year 2000 and up cars. Read More...

I own a 1992 735. I bought it in 1994 (Florida) for $29,500 with 30k miles on it. I now have 223,670 miles. I too have had to decide between repair or replace. At this point I can say that I'm glad I did all those repairs. And some were substantial like a/c, front end suspension, drive shaft, exhaust. I now have 220k miles on my 1992 735i. I paid $30k in 1994 off a lease, it had 30k miles. Repairs: Radiator and fan clutch @150k miles power steering hoses (both) twice in 11 years radio (replaced with another OEM) headliner @ 140k miles Drive shaft @ 220k miles Fuel pump @ 160k miles bulbs every now and then top-end freshen up @ 160k miles ($3000) Car runs perfect, no ... When BMW started (in 1994) they used VDO, which is part of Siemens. By the way, they were the first ones in Europe. Read More...
