There is nothing special about a twin-turbo I-6 that develops 300hp. Toyota had one as early as the 1993 model year in the Supra Turbo. Yes, that was an I-6 engine. Toyota strapped on a turbo, too, until a new V6 engine with greater bore diamter and hence power output than the normally aspiriated I-6 became available in the following economic cycle. Not sure where the "cast iron V8" came from. I was talking about aluminum V8 having lower weight than cast iron I6; perhaps even aluminum I-6 with turbo charger strapped to the top of it. A turbo charger is certainly much more complicated and weighs more than a V6 with bigger bore would have been, if the goal is 306hps. "The 300 HP I6 twin-turbo is one of the best powerplants ... I know that it's hard to tell from a photo, Tony, but one of the 2008 550 interior shots unfortunately looks like more of the tired "same old, same old." In the brochure, BMW admits that it would be hard to tell the current 550i from the 2008 version. Since that C&D review, no accident has been reported as a direct result of faulty BMW brakes for any 2006 or 2007 BMW models, as far as I know. I have had BMW's continuously since 1993 and the brakes have always stopped the vehicles quickly. I have absolute confidence in them even with that annoying little jerk at the end. Well, since the S430 costs 31% more than the LS430, is 9% slower 0-60, has 5% less HP and 8% less torque, it had better be "superior" in SOME ways to SOME people, else MB would sell zero units. Hands down, MB wins in sheer prestige. Aesthetics are a personal judgement, and in my personal opinion the S does offer more attractive exterior styling (but not necessarily interior). As far as ... • 1995 BMW Engine

This may be a day late and all, but regarding the problems with a circa 1995 7 series BMW.... I was recently looking into this, and from 1993 to 1995 (think that's correct) BMW used a nickel alloy engine, called Nikasil. This alloy, combined with the relatively high sulphur content of gas sold in some US regions, hastened pitting of the cylinder walls. BMW extended the warranty, but if you buy ... Read More

I'd have to disagree about the Acura NSX, the car is rare because it's 10+ years old and just doesn't sell. Acura has stated many times that they would love to import more of these. The NSX sold very well between 1991-1993, but after that it's been downhill. I'ts not a rare car by choice. Well I guess we'll never know about the profit margins on the 5-Series BMW models, but ... Yep the X5 was to just generate profits. But it is fun to drive and works in the snow. It's still a debate if the Cayenne is going to tarnish the Porsche image but I have a feeling it will sell if they price it right. I'm looking forward to a new Audi S8. I will probably not buy another S class. I didn't have any problems with my previous ones ... Read More

Of course Lexus got BMW's attention. That's why for 1993 they brought out the 740 for 735 money (which by the way was 400E money). The 7-series was considerably more car than the 400E, yet the pricing was similar. This proves that MB's pricing was out of control. Pricing for the 5-series has grown little to it's present version, along with the present E-Class. There is no doubt that MB in ... Read More

  • V8 Replacement and new Acura Vs 93 BMW 7

Dave, Rmorin2, Lenscap Thanks for your input! I am looking to hold the next car I buy for the long term, so I am leaning toward purchasing the new Acura. Just cannot afford the time (and $) of dragging what admittedly is a super driving machine (1993 7 Series) back to the dealership for costly maintenance. Thanks again!

Hello folks, I've never owned a BMW, but recently I came across one that has 120K miles that looks interesting. According to the current (second) owner, the car had its engine replaced in a factory recall at 80,000. Something about gas additives in the New England area harming the 4.0 Litre V8. Sounds like the car has been impeccably maintained - oil changed every 2500 miles, new water pump, brakes, and ... Read More

Need 740 Info. My 735iL just got totaled by some inattentive fool. So I'm looking to replace with an early 740. Anyone out there know how long BMW had problems with the early V8's? Was it the whole 1993 model year or just the real early ones? Any tips would be appreciated.

ejerod - well said - at least on the car part of your post!! SC430 is gorgeous but from what I understand hard to get. xjs5 - I, for the life of me, can't understand what you are talking about. I could'nt care less what a professional driver thought about a car. I purchase to suit my needs and test drive the cars I'm interested in beforehand. It's pretty easy to ... Read More

You're right on some things, wrong on others. I don't know if you've been to the autoshows this season, but the new Q doesn't even attract any attention. HP is going to have to mean a lot, because to me this is sorry, pitiful car, I would rather have (gulp!) the LS430. Japanese have no design talent at all. If that is what the new Z is going to look like ... Read More

Yes, I could see how the BMW "tippy" could help during the hotlapping in a 740i Sport. Certainly better than a standard slushbox. Yet the tippy doesn't allow nearly the control you have in a standard manual gearbox. That's the perspective I was coming from. My hands (and feet:) are competent operating the controls of a true blue sports car. I've never driven a slushbox drivetrained car around a track so ... Read More
