Re: How to replace a new battery for 525i 2002 model? [andys120]

Thanks for your reply. I just got one from BMW and replaced by myself. Everything seems ok. Read More...

Re: How to replace a new battery for 525i 2002 model? [pham]

You can get a new battery from any competent garage or auto parts store. BMW recommends using only their proprietary OEM units but amperage is amperage, I replaced mine with a Delco unit that is a bit cheaper than the OEM. In any case IIRC the exact Varta unit the factory puts in is unavailable in the USA. The primary concern if you change it yourself is to insure that ... Read More...

Oil Consumption and CPO Warranty

I now have 66.5K miles on my 2002 530i. Over the last 10K miles or so, it's been going through about a quart of oil every 3K miles. I am using the dealer recommended oil, which is the BMW High Performance Full Synthetic Motor Oil 5W-30. Is this amount of oil consumption a concern? About half of the miles is at Southern California highway speeds and half is city or in heavy ... Read More...

Re: Sport Package [richardga73]

roadburner, why isn't the 550 your cup of tea with 360 hp and torque, fast shifting tranny and choice of sport seats? There's nothing wrong with the E60; it's simply too big and heavy for my tastes. I prefer a vehicle shorter than 175 inches and weighing under 3200 pounds. And since whatever I buy eventually ends up at a track day -my Jeep TJ and my wife's X3 truck excluded- ... Read More...

BMW 528xi vs. Audi A6 Q vs. Lexus GS 350 AWD

Re: Reposted from the 5-Series discussion.. [shipo]

my brand new 2002 530i with an MSRP of nearly $49,000 was as inexpensive to insure as our (then) four year old Dodge Grand Caravan. When I bought my GS, I was contemplating BMW 5/3 as well. However, insurance quotes were 15-20% more for the Bimmers. Read More...

Reposted from the 5-Series discussion..

You know..., I've been hearing where various BMWs have performed less than satisfactorily on many IIHS crashes for at least a decade, and yet, insurance company actuarial data suggests that BMWs are just about the safest cars one can drive these days. Geez, my brand new 2002 530i with an MSRP of nearly $49,000 was as inexpensive to insure as our (then) four year ... Read More...

Re: 5-sport [sdg380]

"Of course, optimum sporting performance calls for performance tires, but outside of regions that are perpetually sunny, you've then got to contend with bi-annual wheels swaps--no big deal to many, but too much of a nuisance to me. (Any comments from somebody with sports suspension and all-season tires?)" Depending upon where my next contract is, I'll be ... Read More...

BMW 5-Series Oil Questions

530i oil consumption

bought a 2002 530i, standard with 20k in 2005. Check engine oil light comes on every 600-700 miles, at which time I have to add a quart of oil(5w-30 synthetic). The dealer I bought the car from said this amount of oil consumption was unusual, but could find nothing wrong with the car after extensive testing. Another dealer says according to BMW, this was within the ... Read More...

Buying a used 5 Series

Re: 5 Series - One Owner Certified - Best bets [nowakj66]

Check the BMWCCA classifieds and the CPO section of BMWNA. BMWCCA go back to day 1 and BMWNA go back 6 years. Two other things; avoid lease cars, they have not been maintained any better than the schedule of "free" service, and you do not need certified cars or definitely you do not need to purchase extended warranties or maintenance plans. I have a 2002 530i SP 5 speed ... Read More...
