2004 BMW 5 Series 545i 4dr Sedan (4.4L 8cyl 6A)

Review

The Benz E500 has the same level of handling as the BMW with none of the rough ride. The Benz shocks adjust their damping rate 100 times per second, and have the ability to stop body roll entirely. Does the Bimmer have any of this? Nope 4 plain old shocks that are adjusted to dislodge your molars at the first pothole. A stiff ride does not mean that your car handles better, It just means that it's stiff and LOW Tech. BMW does not offer Nav system until the fall. BMW does not offer Bluetooth until next year. BMW does not offer 7 speed transmission, period.

Favorite Features

Good looks, good performance

Suggested Improvements

BMW should really drop the games in the sales department. For years now they have created a false illusion of value by sitting their inventory outside the shipping ports. BMW dealers intentionally only keep a couple of each model in stock.

2004 BMW 5 Series 530i 4dr Sedan (3.0L 6cyl 6M)

Review

This is my second 5 series, and is lacking compated to the 2002 model. The active steering is OK, as is i-drive, zip is good as is braking. I-drive is overkill (e.g. buttons for radio would be better), interior feels like a Camry or Avalon instead of a BMW, it's got more squeaks and rattles than an 80's vintage GM car, it "floats" when hit by strong winds, problem with the gas tank such that it thinks it's full after being filled with 1-2 gallons (even if it needs a full tank), had to have i- drive fixed by dealer within first few months, inferior storage and cup holders (OK so that's standard BMW and not specific to 2004 5 series), and in general does not stack up to the previous 530.

Favorite Features

Handling, braking, moving headlights, ambiance lighting and amber displays, roomier than previous 5 series.

Suggested Improvements

Quality definitely below par, reinvent the cockpit feel of the front interior, better stereo system/speakers, more storage space, a few more HP to stack up with the competition's new models.

Review

From speed of, e.g., 30 mph, as gas pedal released to bring vehicle to stop/lower speed (when coasting and/or braking), as vehicle slows driver feels jerk/jolt forward a number times as vehicle shifts/lurches down from gear to gear (seems to be caused by abrupt increase, and then decrease in speed; and sometimes associated with a clunking sound) as it comes to a stop. At a stop, when placed in reverse, and after releasing the brake pedal, without depressing the gas pedal, the vehicle suddenly moves in a backward motion and reaches a speed in excess of 5 mph. BMW&service states: "normal" conditions.

Favorite Features

On the highway, when driving at a steady speed, the vehicle is enjoyable, tight as to outside sound, smooth on road, handles well, is comfortable inside. Not driving in City where fuel economy averages approx 10mpg.

Suggested Improvements

Assume what I describe in my review is "normal"; BMW should not make/sell a car that is "normal" like that.

Review

Beautiful car, but has caused me nothing except problems! One day the engine wouldn't start and when it finally did the engine would rev and the Service Engine Soon light would be on. Also, the Passenger Airbag Off is always lit. To top off the trouble, today the car completely broke down! Less than 3 months old, and it is dead. Engine wouldn't start, emergency lights wouldn't work, dead! Unbelievable, nobody can believe it, this is a BMW we're talking about! I have no clue what is going to happen, but I am being dead serious. I hope and am pretty sure that this doesn't and won't happen to anyone else, but there's always a chance, so beware buyers!

See review. Also, speedometer doesn't work properly. There's a letter in the storage compartment stating that the speedometer reads 50 when you're actually driving 57.5 mph. BMW told me they can't even fix it, I just have to deal with it.
