    I bought a 2001 BMW 540i about one year ago. The coolant tank broke somehow while driving and emptied all the coolant. Engine is now dead. I would like to sell it to someone who is willing to repair it. Car has 82,000 miles on it, 3 month old tires, brand new headliner and rides great. I just don't want to deal with a BMW anymore. Any advice?

    Since your 525 is preowned, do you know if the side mirrors are originals? The reason I ask is that I read in either BMW mag or Roundel that the design of the side mirrors was changed @2001 (maybe even a bit earlier)to help eliminate wind noise. If the previous owner replaced the originals, then they could be causing the noise. Just a thought.

    Actually the GTO demographic is 28-45. Heck the BMW 540i 2001-2003 is more expensive used than a new GTO. Biggest thing I'm worried about is out-warranty repairs, I hear on BMWs they can be quite costly. -mike

    I just picked up a 2001 525iT and they had lost the main key. The valet key got me home and dealer will pay for a new key if they cannot find it. However the rear latch is not "hooked" and lid is bouncing. Anyone know how I can get it open? or shut tight? They also have agreed if it needs a new latch to replace it.

    If BMW's is as reliable as my Audi's good luck -- four months and four pushbutton starters and still counting, I'll bet. BMW has used the push-button start buttons since 2001 (02 model year). It started in their 7-Series and has now trickled down.... I haven't heard of people having problems with them, and even if they used to, I'm sure they would have worked the bugs out by now.

    Yes, that's a symptom and a very typical BMW problem from that era...also bad or frozen u-joints will do this. You'd better hope it's a bad center support bearing, as I'm fairly certain you can't replace the u-joints--you have to get a whole new rebuilt driveshaft.     I could not agree more with your opinion on the 2001 BMW. I had a 2001 540i until it was totalled last month. No car I have driven since quite measures up to that. I have been wondering if the new 3 series may be a good substitute since it is almost as large as the old 5. Has anybody compared the two?
