The lower mileage I found the price were more than ten grand. The higher mileage I found the price were in the range of seven grand to nine grand regardless of the year and the model of the 5 series. That 1999 BMW with only 57k mi and only for 9 grand is very surprising and much more cheaper than any BMW I have seen. I suppose this is my reason. ... Read More

Two questions

There might be two basic questions one could ask a guy about his car: “What does that car do?” and “What does that car do for you?” A 1999 Passat was my first German sedan. Even at $24,000 it gave me a taste of German engines and German suspensions/steering/handling. What it did was its modest version of cornering on rails. Save your breath. A modified Neon or Civic could probably beat any stock BMW or GM "at the track". That trade in on a 540i 6-speed is an eye opener. I know you bought it used, so you didn't do poorly, but my guess is that the 540i 6-speed was about $50,000 new in 1998. A trade in of $18,000 is a $32,000 5-6 year depreciation hit. By comparison, I almost bought a 1998 E300 Turbodiesel new in late 1997 for $42,200 (still have the purchase papers). Based upon what ... BMW uses a 15w40 mineral based oil and a 5w30 synthetic, both produced by Castrol for BMW. If your car is a 1999 or later I strongly suggest synthetic, because engine tolerances changed in that model year. Castrol Syn-Tech 5w30 is the same as the BMW synthetic, so it is a good choice.
