Comfortable, practical with great seats
By mooreslawcars on
2012 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo 535i xDrive 4dr Hatchback AWD (3.0L 6cyl Turbo 8A)
Traded in my 2012 Audi A6 as the seats were extremely uncomfortable (same seats on the A7) with rounded top of seats cutting into shoulder blades in order to get a hatchback BMW with the extremely comfortable optional Multi-contour seats.
Well worth the many dollars lost in trade.
Love the space and the very smooth ride.
Interior on 5GT is even nicer than on the Audi - impressive.
Can toss my bike in the back with ease.
Dual tailgate is practical.
Much slower off the start than the 300hp 700 lbs lighter Audi - should have gotten the V-8.
Ideally BMW would sell this as a 540 and 550 like the 6 and 7 series allowing a slighter more powerful base engine.
Multi-Contour seats awesome.
Long wheelbase comfort.
Extremely high fit and finish on the interior.
Big nav screen always allowing the trafffic map off to the side really great for my painful daily commute.
Adaptive cruise control less sensitive than Audi's ACC but following distances are more usefully programmed.
Heads up display a must in 2012 as speedometer at legalish highway speeds tough to see - note 2013 has LED display to reprogram instrument panel.
Hatchback / tailgate really works.
Top view camera option a must in parking garages.
Rear seat room superb.
The iphone integration works if this is important to you.
For me, made mistake in not getting V-8 as 6 cylinder is a bit sluggish in this very heavy car. A bit loose in turns so were I to have a do-over would get the dynamic dampers (as well as bigger cooler looking wheels).
Prior reviewers noted poor visibility, small mirrors but I think visibility all around is fine esp with multi-camera option.
Stereo and iDrive are fine with minor exception that the live traffic map info is displayed in an almost unreadable set of gray triangles.
Have set secondary map to total gray in order to get viewable traffic.
Audi better here.
Get 20 mpg which is fine but if you get the bigger engine 18.5 gallon gas tank may be a tiny bit small assuming ~17-18mpg.
