I lost my 21 yr old son July 2009 when he fell asleep in our 2002 BMW 330 with the engine running. The car caught fire after idling for one hour. Investigation showed cooling fan failure. I read that 2001 3-series had same problem with massive recall. Anyone heard of same problems with 2002 cars? BMW refusing at accepting any blame or taking corrective actions. Do ... Read More...

I have a 2001 BMW 3 Series Coupe (E46). First thing in the morning when the engine is cold, the engine revs on its own. The rev needle goes up to about 3,000 rpm and then drops to idle. I have a 2007 328XI with Conti RFTs. I complained of noisy rough ride and at about 3K miles, the dealer changed the Bridgestones to Contis at no charge. Although better, the Contis are still noisy and ride rough. I had a BMW 3 series 2001 and 2004 with regular tires (not RFTs). Much more enjoyable ride and not noisy. Are RFTs here forever? Maintenance is key with BMWs! I would look for service records with the car, or I believe, you can take the VIN to a BMW dealership and they can get you a history of all maintenance done on that car by any BMW service department. From the NHTSA site. This failure appears to be in different cars in different model years. IIRC one post I read said that there were 140 complaints on the site regarding this issue but I haven't verified that. Here is a sample of the problem. I'm considering buying a 2009 328xi. Given that my current car is a 2001 model with only 57k miles on it I am expecting to put a similar amount of miles on this car in that time frame.
