the intermediate shaft failures have scared me off the Porsches. I really really wanted to get one this last time out ... just couldn't bring myself to take the risk. The reason for this is actually the oil. The engine was designed for high-zinc oils that are common in Europe and were judged to be minimally acceptable in the U.S. at the time. But the EPA drove the maximum levels to ... Read More

"You should be able to find a CPO 2009 off lease with less then 40K, which would increase the warranty to 100K for mid to low 20's." Based on the stickers I saw, I am very sure I cannot get a CPO 2009 335i for less than $30K. Fortunately, I'm not interested in a 335i. After driving it, I didn't like the response of the throttle. It's not turbo lag, per ... Read More

Fedman it appears that BMW and Porsche's had thier value much better then others. However, if you look at the base price for a new 911, you are talking 80K base... The CPO 335i for 40K seems about right, a fully loaded 335i is almost 60K. You should be able to find a CPO 2009 off lease with less then 40K, which would increase the warranty to 100K for mid to ... Dealer pricing
Written by: fedlawman on Feb 27, 2012 1:31:23 PM
What is it with these dealers? I went to look at cars (BMW's first) over the weekend and honed in on a CPO 2009 335i coupe. It had nice equipment (leather, nav, etc.) and only 17,000 miles on the odo, but they were asking $40,000 (marked down from $45,000!). I know this car was probably $50,000 new, but really, only $10,000 less than a new one? I bet if I asked ... Read More

Great post -- I nominate it for "one of the great posts" awards (as if there is such an award.) If the new BMW turbo 4 is as smooth as the 4 that was in my 2009 A4, I would be delighted. Displacement replacements and other thoughts. . .
Written by: markcincinnati on Dec 5, 2011 1:13:11 PM
A friend of mine frequently uses the phrase: "There's no replacement for displacement." He is appalled at the number of cars that may offer more than 6 cylinders but rarely sell (or stock) anything other than "blown" I4's, I6's or V6's (both naturally aspirated and forced induction.) I tell him that there IS a replacement for displacement and that it is "volumetric efficiency." The 211HP 258 pound feet I4 in my ... Read More

Japanese vs Germans

At the price point and at the "class" (ELLPS) we are talking about, the value leaders remain Infiniti and Acura. More content and by some definition, I'm sure, more car for the money when you're comparing Infiniti to BMW (which seems to be the comparison that "everybody" makes); I think I'll compare Acura to Audi, for the time being -- it seems somehow to work for me. I'm going along with Roadburner in his analysis. BMW's are not cheap cars to maintain, and if you take ownership (even at what seems to be a good price today) of one that has been "raw-hided", I can almost guarantee you will rue the day you signed the paperwork. The brake changes by themselves indicate severe treatment, and if you add in the poor interior quality... Also, the length of the ... Read More

I'd pass; the brakes should last upwards of 50,000 miles. The oil should have been changed at @ 15,000 miles. And I seriously doubt that the car was tracked -at a BMW CCA HPDE at least- as CCA requires that droptops have a permanently attached hardtop AND a roll bar. Regarding invoice, I was also told 6.9% below sticker (MSRP) by one dealer in Los Angeles, but 2 other dealers told me 6% below. I strongly believe it's around 7%, and not any less. Some BMW dealers just have a higher markup, and one sales girl admitted it to me. After I offered a fair price, she quoted me at least $1,100 more than other dealers! Later, she found out I ... There is no manufacturer holdback on BMWs so you will have a hard time finding a true deal that is actually below invoice. That's asking the dealer to take a loss on that car. $500 over invoice, minus the $2500 holiday cash for a total financed cost of $2000 under invoice is a good deal. $300 over invoice is a great deal. I paid $1250 over invoice for an ordered model. ... Read More
