Re: Out-of-warranty reliability [roadburner]
Written by: jamiem4 on Mar 31, 2010 7:13:07 AM
Hi-I was wondering how you locate a BMW CCA technician? We are storing our deployed son's 2002 BMW 328i and it likely will need a new clutch. The estimate from the dealership was almost $2K for that work and replacement of the Guibo joint. They wanted over $660 for the replacement of a slightly leaking valve cover gasket. I'd like to get the items fixed for when our son returns but ... Read More

All six of my past BMW as well as the three I currently(a 1975 2002, a 1995 318ti, and a 2004 X3 2.5) own have had speedometers that are 4-5 mph optimistic. Big deal.

Speaking for myself, I have a BMW "product", a MINI, which can be serviced at a BMW dealer, and the *only* things I would take the car there for might be....might be...very complicated electrical/computer work that could require access to esoteric tools or information. Regarding the valve cover, there is a "leak" and there is what we call "weepage". A leak might drip on the ground or foul electrical parts, but ... Read More

The dealer is hosing you big time; no way does it cost $600+ dollars to R&R an E46 valve cover gasket. I'd start looking for a good independent BMW tech here. A good indie shop will service your car properly for much less than the dealer that is trying to gouge you.

Thanks again...I'm making a list of what to have fixed and where! The BMW dealer said that the 'valve cover gasket has a slight leak' and to replace it is $661. I'm not a mechanic but I do realize gaskets will wear over time and it is a used car. I'm just not sure of the price. I just don't want my son to return, drive the car, and have something ... Many thanks!! I think the items were "clutch is at its end of life", and the guibo joint needs replacing...also the fuel filter, valve gasket, brake fluid, engine filter, drive shaft assembly joint, and a left rear side ground wire (althought the break light does come on when you engage the breaks). Technically I think a trip to a local may do the trick but is there any advantage to havning ... Read More

Alignment question
Written by: rhmass on Mar 11, 2010 12:45:55 PM
HI, I need advice on potential need for alignment. I brought my 2002 325 xit wagon in last night to have the rims with snow tires taken off and replaced by the summer tires. I noticed that all four tiress seemed to have a bit more wear on the inside. The wagon track straight on highway without any pulling. My past experience with alignment problem seemed to have more wear on ... Read More

Winter Tires, again... (Reposted from the 5-Series board)

Hey Gang! This (long) post is sort of a catch-up post, prompted in no small part by our 5-Series friend and compatriot DaBimmer, who just sent me an E-Mail suggesting (very tactfully I might add) that I get off my butt and rejoin the discussions here in the TownHall. Thanks Tony for the kick in the hind quarters. ;-) For starters, I am NOT currently driving a BMW, I have instead ... Read More

Car shopping for a friend
Written by: climatecontrol on Feb 1, 2003 1:30:53 AM
Hello room, I just wanted to ask a question. I have a friend in the market for a newer car under $25K. He is looking at a 2002 Nissan Maxima SE with leather pack, auto, sunroof, bose. He has been cross shopping other cars. So far he has came up with a Linc L.S. V8, a 2001 Acura CL coupe Type S(asking $20,900 for the CL), and a 2000 BMW 325i ... Read More

The leatherette is durable and easy to care for. One BMW salesperson I know tells of how people come in to trade their Bimmer and swear that the seats are leather when they are in fact leatherette. It's a personal choice; me, I'll take the leatherette every time. I've been underwhelmed by the BMW HK systems that I've heard, but I haven't seriously evaluated a 2002 or newer system.

Lexus or Audi Discssion
Written by: plekto on Mar 14, 2008 2:03:59 PM
I've come to the conclusion that the best car for the OP is actually none of the above. He wants something affordable and sporty and luxury, that's also reliable and gets good gas mileage. Unfortunately, they stopped making this car 2-3 years ago, but that's fine, because used like-new examples run about $20K. Get a Mercedes C230K Sedan with manual. This is the *4 door* sedan with the 1.8 supercharged engine ... Read More

Re: Will Choices Change ? [alltorque]

I'd buy a BMW or Audi diesel in a heartbeat. I've driven them in Europe and and entirely impressed, especially in their abilities to accelerate from say 20 mph to speeds of well over 100 mph. Forget the issue of fuel availability, if diesel cars start becoming popular (and I predict that they will), gasoline stations will increasingly start offering diesel as well. Case in point, of the three closest gas ... Read More

I think that you are entirely too caught up in straight line acceleration, and if that's your only yardstick, go buy a WRX and be done with it. There are plenty of people who would consider the x28i over the x35i, and for many reason, me included. When I leased my 2002 530i I made the conscious decision NOT to get a 540i (or an M5 for that matter). Why? Because ... Read More
