    Who keeps a battery 7 years? That'll be me, or even longer . My (almost) 21 year old Sentra is only on it's second battery. The '87 BMW I got rid of in the fall was still on the battery my son put in back in 2001. My 2005 truck still has the factory battery in it.

    I'm thinking plenty of oil can make its way through the system before everything gets all hotted up; I checked maybe ten minutes into the drive, long enough to allow anything heading downstream to make it to the end, but not long enough for everything in the system to burn off.

    I'm actually surprised you found any. I wouldn't think any oil could make it that far back through the chain. Whatever the headers don't crisp, I would think the heat all the way down the chain (and the cats and muffler) would catch/vaporize anything left.

    Funny thing, in all of the years I've been looking at old cars for friends and such, this is the first time I've ever actually seen a tail pipe with any significant oil in it.

    it appears to be in good shape As always, I strongly recommend a pre-purchase inspection performed by a good BMW tech. Once you know the true condition of the car you can begin to discuss price.

    I agree with you 100% fedlawman. Even though my 2010 TSX is equipped with an automatic, it is the best automatic I've ever driven.     I don't think 0.9% financing makes up for the $30,000+ difference in price between a new 328i and a 10 year-old 330i. And to answer the original question, I'd personally choose the E46 over the E36.

    with the current intrest rates. Why don't you just step un and get a new 3 series. i got 0.9% financing. New 3 is much nice in general and much prettier.

    An automatic I assume, correct? Who rebuilt the replacement? It's only a mistake if you paid too much or the car has been neglected. I hope you had an experienced BMW tech inspect it prior to purchase.

    I have a 2007 328XI with Conti RFTs. I complained of noisy rough ride and at about 3K miles, the dealer changed the Bridgestones to Contis at no charge. Although better, the Contis are still noisy and ride rough. I had a BMW 3 series 2001 and 2004 with regular tires (not RFTs). Much more enjoyable ride and not noisy. Are RFTs here forever?

I would look for service records with the car, or I believe, you can take the VIN to a BMW dealership and they can get you a history of all maintenance done on that car by any BMW service department.     So if I were to buy a used 3-series, is there anything i should look for? Sort of a bug-a-boo that some 3-series are cursed with. The 2001-2004 3ers have a pretty decent reliability record.     I have a 2001 325i (130K miles). Oil Separator failed and it's going to cost me $1900. Yes, it was cold outside when it occurred. Apparently, the problem arises more often in cold climate areas.     Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. The field rep looked into the problem and the BMW dealership called and said that BMW would pay for all but $500. My husband then authorized the repair right away. That is a savings of $900. It seems like this confirms that they know they have an engineering issue with the oil separator.     When I bought a 2000 328Ci recently, the sales rep told me there was a way to connect an iPod to the audio system, and I could ask the service dept for help with that. Since I've sold the car, it's not something I would pursue but it might be worth a call to your local BMW dealer's service dept. to see what they say about it.

    Based on my own ownership experiences(nine BMWs since 1983- I currently run three) I have found that BMWs are not terribly expensive to own. My 1995 Club Sport has only needed a thermostat, two belts and idler pullies(replaced as a precaution), and one set of pads and rotors in over 113,000 miles(not to mention numerous HPDEs and autocrosses).     I am very disappointed with the quality of the mechanical components of my 2001 330i. Twice we have replaced the oil pan because the screw sheared off and now the oil separator has malfunctioned.     I am not sure about 2000 and later cars, however, the "Free Maintenance" program for my former 1999 328i did NOT include brakes. I have heard that BMW enhanced the program in either 2000 or 2001, however, I am unsure about whether the brakes are covered under the newer program. Best Regards, Shipo

    "Berkeley Motor Works" is a shop I've heard recommended to a few folks. Also, there's a place in Danville but the name escapes me right now. Maybe try googling...? Or, check bimrs.org which lists independent shops that are certified for bmw's.
