BMW To Expand in South CarolinaBy Michelle Krebs March 11, 2008
The plant is already the exclusive source for the X3 and X5 sport-utilities. The expansion will accommodate the next-generation X3 as well as the X6 sports coupe unveiled at the Detroit auto show in January. The X6 will be made exclusively in South Carolina.
BMW will add 1.2 million square feet of production space. Already BMW has started to expand the plantâs paint shop.
The expansion of the German automakerâs U.S. manufacturing operation is being done, in part, to offset the weak American dollar, which makes manufacturing in the States, one of BMWâs largest markets, more financially advantageous.
At the same time BMW announced a couple of weeks ago it would cut 5,000 jobs in Germany and 600 elsewhere, or 7.5 percent of its work force over two years to improve its profit margins, pushing them closer to those earned by rival Mercedes-Benz.
