TOKYO — Mitsubishi says it is targeting fuel economy of 70+ mpg with its redesigned Mirage compact, which goes on sale in March 2012 in Thailand and will be rolled out later in the year to other global markets.

There are no immediate plans to sell the new Mirage in the U.S.

The heart of the five-door, five-passenger sedan is a new 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine that features a stop-start system and is linked with other fuel-saving technologies, including a brake energy-recovery system. It is mated to a new continuously variable automatic transmission.

The redesigned Mirage is built on a new compact platform and will be assembled in Thailand.

Edmunds.com says: Super-frugal, but hardly an eye-catcher.
