PARIS — Maserati's first SUV will be called the Maserati Levante, the automaker confirmed on Thursday at the 2012 Paris Auto Show. The Kubang name, which was used on the concept version of the Maserati SUV, has been scrapped.

The Levante name has never been used before by Maserati. It honors the automaker's early history.

The name is "derived from 'Via Emilia Levante' in Bologna where, almost a century ago, the Maserati brothers dreamt of a company that today still bears their name," said Maserati in a statement.

Maserati also said its new midsize sedan will be named Ghibli, a name first used on a coupe launched in 1967. The production version of the four-door Ghibli is expected to debut at either the 2013 Geneva Auto Show or the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show, according to Automotive News.

The Levante will be produced in the U.S. by Chrysler and is expected to debut in 2014. It shares underpinnings with the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Edmunds says: Maserati draws on its heritage as it christens its new SUV and sedan, two models designed to boost global sales.
