NEW YORK — Pricing for the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG starts at $48,375, including a $925 destination charge, reflecting a $17,550 premium over the base 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA. The CLA45 AMG makes its world debut on Wednesday at the 2013 New York Auto Show.

The 2014 CLA45 AMG goes on sale in the U.S. in November.

Including shipping, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA starts at $30,825.

The CLA45 AMG is by far the cheapest AMG model in the lineup, coming in at under $50,000 and allowing young buyers to get into the AMG brand at a relatively inexpensive price point. In comparison, the 2013 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG starts at $60,705. Some AMG models exceed the $200,000 mark. For example, the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG starts at $213,145, including shipping.

A direct competitor for the Mercedes-Benz CLA is the 2013 Audi A3 sedan, which goes on sale in the U.S. in the second quarter of 2014. The A3 sedan was unveiled informally on Tuesday at the New York auto show with a global debut in April at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show to follow. As of this writing, pricing had not been announced on the 2013 Audi A3 sedan, although Audi said earlier this month that the car would be priced around $30,000.

The 2014 CLA45 AMG is equipped with a 355-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine linked to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. In comparison, the 2014 CLA250 is equipped with a 208-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine linked to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Features on the CLA45 AMG include 18-inch AMG twin five-spoke wheels, sport seats, a sport suspension, dual exhaust with chrome tips and a leather steering wheel with shift paddles.

Options include a Premium package that bundles an iPod/MP3 media interface, Sirius/XM Satellite Radio, a Harman Kardon sound system, heated front seats, auto-dimming mirrors, integrated garage door opener, dual-zone climate control and a compass. Stand-alone options include black ash wood trim, a panorama sunroof and blind spot assist.

Mercedes-Benz still won't share projected sales numbers on the CLA models.

"We consider the CLA a success if it is accepted by the intended customers that are younger and younger-at-heart," the company said in a statement. "While we don't share projected sales goals, we believe that we have a simple yet effective lineup of CLA250, CLA250 4Matic and CLA45 AMG that will capture many hearts and minds."

Edmunds says: While the $48,375 sticker price on the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG may seem breathtaking to some young buyers, it's actually affordable given the AMG cachet.

I'd have thought that a V6 or some other 6 cylinder would have suited this car better, considering the fact that buyers of these cars think that engine noise is an important factor.
