NEW YORK — The redesigned 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport starts at $63,495 for the SE model, including an $895 destination charge, reflecting a $2,005 price increase over the base 2013 Range Rover Sport. It debuted on Tuesday at the 2013 New York Auto Show.

The 2014 Range Rover Sport goes on sale in the fall.

The top-of-the-line 2014 Range Rover Sport Autobiography starts at $93,295, including an $895 destination charge.

The base 2013 Range Rover Sport HSE starts at $61,490, including an $895 destination charge, according to Land Rover's online vehicle configurator. The 2013 Range Rover Sport Autobiography starts at $87,790, including shipping.

Land Rover changed the naming process on the Range Rover Sport, dropping the LUX package name, making that the HSE. The previous HSE is now the SE.

In comparison, the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, one of the Range Rover Sport's rivals, starts at $61,290, including a $995 destination charge. Another competitor, the 2013 BMW X5 xDrive35i Sport Activity, starts at $58,595, including an $895 destination charge.

The 2014 Range Rover Sport shed approximately 800 pounds compared to the previous model and gets a beefed-up engine lineup, including a 340-horsepower supercharged 3.0-liter V6 on the SE and HSE models. The 2014 Range Rover Sport Supercharged and Autobiography models get the 510-hp supercharged V8 engine. Both engines are paired with a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission.

Land Rover did not announce fuel economy numbers on the 2014 Range Rover Sport, but Stuart Schorr, a Jaguar Land Rover spokesman told Edmunds that the company is predicting an estimated 20 percent improvement compared to the outgoing normally aspirated V8.

The 2013 Range Rover Sport with the V8 engine returns 13 mpg in city driving and 18 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. The EPA has not posted 2014 Range Rover Sport fuel economy numbers.

The company says the Range Rover Sport's new aluminum structure gets credit for the weight savings. The previous-generation vehicle featured a steel unibody mounted on a full-frame chassis. Dieting has been a major effort at Land Rover lately. The latest full-size Range Rover dropped 700 pounds compared to its predecessor. The Range Rover and Range Rover Sport were developed together, the company notes.

The 2014 Range Rover Sport bears a family resemblance to the smaller Range Rover Evoque.

Land Rover describes the redesigned Range Rover Sport as the "fastest, most agile and responsive Land Rover ever."

Details include power-deployable side steps that are optional for the first time on the Range Rover Sport, a new 5+2 third-row seating option and a choice of two transfer cases.

Edmunds says: Better fuel economy, less weight and more engine choices should make this version of the Range Rover Sport a compelling choice.
