What Is It?
2014 Jeep Cherokee
What's Special About It?
It's easy to judge a vehicle when you first see the photos online. It's easy, and usually unfair. Things just look different in person and the 2014 Jeep Cherokee is proof that you can't judge a car by its photos.
In person, the 2014 Jeep Cherokee (especially the rugged Trailhawk edition) works.
It also works on- and off-road. (At least, on paper it does.) The base engine is a 2.4-liter inline-4 that makes 184 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque and returns up to 31 mpg highway. This engine is fine, but the big news is the 3.2-liter Pentastar V6 that is a direct derivative of the 3.6-liter Pentastar that Jeep has been putting into anything and everything (including our long-term Jeep Wrangler). In this displacement and application, it revs out 271 hp and 239 lb-ft of torque.
There are also three 4x4 systems available for the new 2014 Jeep Cherokee. Jeep Active Drive I and Jeep Active Drive II are available on all of the Cherokee models, while Jeep Active Drive Lock is only available on the Trailhawk. Jeep Active Drive II has low range, whereas Jeep Active Drive Lock has a low range and a locking rear diff. All are available with the new Jeep Selec-Terrain system with as many as five pre-programmed modes: Auto, Snow, Sport, Sand/Mud and Rock.
While we've got a host of engine/transfer case options, there is only one transmission available: a nine-speed automatic. Yes, a nine-speed. Fifth gear is a 1.00:1 ratio, while everything beyond that is an overdrive, finishing out at 0.48:1 in 9th.
What Edmunds Says:
Check out the 2014 Jeep Cherokee in person. It's got the on-and-off road chops and the look really does stand out, even if it is a little funky.
