LOS ANGELES — U.S. consumers can get up close and personal for the first time with the 503-horsepower Volkswagen Design Vision GTI.

It makes its North American debut at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The Design Vision GTI wowed the crowds last May at the 2013 Worthersee meet in Reifnitz, Germany.

The concept sprints from zero to 62 mph in just 3.9 seconds, courtesy of a turbocharged and direct-injection TSI 3.0-liter V6 engine. It gets a 273-horsepower boost over the conventional GTI Performance model.

The special model has three drive modes: "Street," "Sport" and "Track."

Volkswagen of America said the "design team's brief was to give a spectacular glance into the future of the GTI."

Design Vision GTI gets a white Club body with black accents and red GTI insignia.

Edmunds says: One of the must-see cars at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show.
