LOS ANGELES — The 2014 Subaru Forester, with slightly edgier look and a roomier cabin, debuted on Wednesday at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show.
The 2014 Forester, which targets the 2013 Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape, goes on sale in the spring. Pricing has not been announced on the new model. The base 2013 Forester 2.5X with a six-speed manual transmission starts at $22,090, including a $795 destination charge.
All-wheel-drive continues to be standard on the 2014 Forester.
The 250-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged engine in the 2014 Forester 2.0XT is new. The Forester 2.5i model continues on with the same 170-hp 2.5-liter flat-4 as last year. The 2013 Forester's five-speed manual transmission and archaic four-speed automatic are gone, replaced with either a six-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission.
A high-torque version of the CVT is standard in the Forester 2.0XT models, where it features six-speed and eight-speed manual shift modes with steering-wheel paddles.
Subaru said Forester 2.5i models with a continuously variable transmission are expected to achieve improved fuel economy ratings over the outgoing model. The 2013 Forester with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and four-speed automatic transmission returns 21 mpg in city driving and 27 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.
Subaru projects that the 2014 Forester 2.5i with the CVT will return 24 mpg in city driving and 32 mpg on the highway.
Subaru characterized the Forester's redesign as "evolutionary" with "sharply defined new details in an all-new body." It is built on a new platform featuring a 0.9-inch longer wheelbase that helps to expand its interior space. The most notable gain is in the rear seat, where legroom is now 41.7 inches.
The 2.0XT models are the most striking, with an exclusive sport-design front bumper, one-piece mesh-style grille and chrome-rimmed fog light bezels.
Edmunds says: There's a major fight brewing in this segment, with redesigned models like the 2014 Subaru Forester and the redesigned 2013 Toyota RAV4 set to duke it out.
