LOS ANGELES — The redesigned 2014 Kia Sorento includes a new high-end SX Limited model, underscoring the Korean automaker's continued march away from its old bargain-basement roots. The 2014 Sorento debuted at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show.
The 2014 Kia Sorento goes on sale in the first quarter of 2013; the 2014 Sorento SX Limited goes on sale in the second quarter of 2013.
Pricing has not been announced for the 2014 Sorento. The Sorento SX Limited may be one of the first Kias to approach the $40,000 mark. The base 2013 Kia Sorento starts at $23,950, including an $800 destination charge, while the top-of-the-line 2013 Sorento SX starts at $34,200, including shipping.
Kia said the inspiration to do a high-end Sorento came from the success of the 2013 Kia Optima SX Limited, which starts at $35,275, including a $775 destination charge.
The new Sorento SX Limited gets such upscale touches as self-leveling xenon HID headlights, 19-inch chrome wheels and red painted brake calipers designed to mimic the ones on Brembo brakes. The cabin gets standard Napa leather-trimmed seats, a wood-trimmed and heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats.
The 2014 Kia Sorento gets a new chassis, a new direct-injected V6 engine, a redesigned cabin and a new infotainment system, along with Kia's first-ever optional blind spot detection system. Other high-end options on the Sorento include a programmable power liftgate, illuminated door handle pockets and dual ventilated air-cooled front seats.
Kia has replaced the Sorento's optional 276-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine with a 3.3-liter GDI V6 engine that produces 290 hp. It is an option on the 2014 Sorento LX and EX and standard on the Sorento LX V6, EX V6, SX and SX Limited. Kia did not offer fuel economy projections on the 2014 Sorento, and the EPA has yet to post official numbers.
The 191-hp 2.4-liter GDI four-cylinder engine is standard equipment on the LX and EX and replaces the standard 175-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine.
The 2014 Sorento with either engine is equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission.
Electric power steering replaces the hydraulic unit from the 2013 model. Kia's updated UVO eServices, the next generation of its voice-activated telematics system, is also featured on the new Sorento.
The redesigned Sorento is set to do battle with the redesigned 2013 Toyota RAV4, which debuted just moments before the wraps came off the 2014 Sorento.
Edmunds says: When you see red painted brake calipers on a Kia, you know you're not in Kansas anymore.
