Audi of America told Edmunds that it could not provide any information on U.S. availability, launch timing or pricing.
"We haven't announced any of that information yet," wrote Andrew Lipman in an e-mailed response to an Edmunds query on Tuesday.
Audi AG said the S3 Sportback will go on sale in Germany in September at the U.S. equivalent of $53,648.
The second-generation S3 Sportback is one of a growing list of high-performance European hatchbacks, including the new Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG. The S3 Sportback aims to steal some of the limelight from the A45 AMG. The A45 AMG marks the first time that Mercedes-Benz's performance brand is offering a high-performance vehicle in the compact class.
The new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine in the S3 Sportback kicks out 300 horsepower. When equipped with the optional six-speed S tronic transmission, the S3 Sportback sprints from zero to 62 mph in 5.0 seconds. A six-speed manual transmission is standard. Audi quotes a 0-62-mph time of 5.5 seconds with the standard transmission. Audi says the Sportback's engine shares only its displacement with its predecessor.
The S3 Sportback gets 18-inch wheels and a lowered S sport suspension. The front fenders and the hood of the S3 Sportback are made of aluminum, which helped to cut the five-door's curb weight by 154 pounds less than the previous model.
Exterior cues include a special grille, faux air intakes on the sides and optional all-LED headlights. The cabin gets an optional multifunction sports steering wheel. S sport seats with diamond quilting are optional.
Edmunds says: Audi is mulling whether to bring the S3 Sportback to the U.S.
