WOLFSBURG, Germany — The 2015 Volkswagen GTI, featuring an optional performance pack, will debut at the 2013 Geneva Auto Show.

Volkswagen of America told Edmunds the 2015 GTI will go on sale here in late spring 2014. The Volkswagen GTI targets the Ford Focus, Honda Civic and Hyundai Elantra, among others.

Volkswagen has not yet decided whether the optional performance pack will be offered in the U.S. The European version of the 2015 GTI will launch with two power levels: 220 horsepower or 230 hp with the optional performance pack. Volkswagen AG also said the revised GTI offers an 18 percent improvement in fuel economy versus the current GTI.

The redesigned GTI features a turbocharged direct-injection 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine linked to a standard six-speed manual transmission. A six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is optional. The 220-hp version sprints from zero to 62 mph in 6.5 seconds when equipped with the manual transmission. It has a top speed of 153 mph. The 230-hp version sprints from zero to 62 mph in 6.4 seconds. It has a top speed of 155 mph.

"We are still evaluating whether we can bring the performance pack to the U.S.," said Mark Gillies, a Volkswagen of America spokesman, in a phone conversation with Edmunds on Tuesday. "We have no finalized U.S. (specifications), no fuel economy numbers."

Gillies also said U.S. pricing hasn't been finalized. The base 2013 Volkswagen GTI starts at $24,995, including a $795 destination charge. The GTI will launch in Europe in May at the U.S. equivalent of $37,005.

The 2013 Volkswagen GTI returns 21 mpg in city driving and 31 mpg on the highway when equipped with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and six-speed manual transmission, according to the EPA. The 2013 GTI with the same engine and a six-speed automatic transmission returns 24 mpg in city driving and 33 mpg on the highway.

The 2015 GTI features red-painted brake calipers, twin chrome tailpipes and a lowered sport suspension. It also features 17-inch "Brooklyn" GTI wheels, side skirts, rear diffusers and smoked LED taillights.

The 2015 GTI gets sport seats with the "Clark" tartan pattern, a black headliner and red ambient lighting. Other details include a sport steering wheel, GTI shifter knob grip and instrument cluster, special trim inserts and stainless-steel pedals.

Standard equipment includes automatic climate control, park assist, a touchscreen infotainment system and a winter pack that includes heated front seats. Three exterior colors are available. They are Tornado Red, Black and Pure White.

Edmunds says: We're playing a waiting game as Volkswagen of America determines final specifications, content availability and pricing for the 2015 Volkswagen GTI.
