TURIN, Italy — The 2014 Alfa Romeo 4C was unveiled on Tuesday ahead of its debut at the 2013 Geneva Auto Show. The highly anticipated 4C is due to lead the brand's return to the U.S. later this year.

The 2014 Alfa Romeo 4C is equipped with a turbocharged 1.75-liter four-cylinder engine with a "scavenging control system" said to get rid of any turbo lag. Alfa Romeo did not disclose how much power the new 4C will deliver. The engine gets direct-injection technology and is all-aluminum. The engine is linked to the Alfa TCT dual-clutch transmission offering automatic or manual modes. Shift paddles are located behind the steering wheel.

Alfa Romeo said the 4C has a power-to-weight ratio of less than 4 kg (8.8 pounds) for every horsepower.

The 4C is also equipped with a driving "DNA" selector that allows the driver to choose from Dynamic, Natural and All Weather modes, plus a special Race mode.

The 4C, a compact midengine car with rear-wheel drive and two bucket seats, has a wheelbase of less than 94.4 inches, said Alfa Romeo. It is 46.4 inches high and 78.7 inches wide. It features a carbon-fiber chassis.

The production 4C has a jet fighter-style cockpit accented by carbon fiber. Alfa Romeo notes that the central cell "has been left in full view to enhance the sense of uniqueness, of technology and light weight."

Edmunds says: The 2014 Alfa Romeo 4C takes a step closer to reality.
