FRANKFURT, Germany — Toyota released a second image of the Toyota Hybrid-R Concept on Tuesday ahead of the car's debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show, apparently putting an end to the thought that this may be the successor to the Toyota Supra.

Toyota said the Hybrid-R "is based on a current Toyota production model."

It is widely speculated that the Hybrid-R is a high-performance Toyota Yaris.

The Toyota statement said the Hybrid-R is equipped with a powertrain that features similar technology to that used by Toyota Racing's TS030 Hybrid racecar in the FIA World Endurance Championship.

It combines a high-power internal combustion engine with electric motors and churns out 400 horsepower. A dual-mode control allows the car's performance to be adjusted for either road or racetrack.

The concept will be revealed on September 10.

Earlier this year, BMW and Toyota announced plans to jointly develop a sports-car platform to be completed by the end of 2013.

The two companies also said they are to jointly develop lightweight technologies for vehicle bodies using cutting-edge materials such as reinforced composites, to use on the new sports-car platform and other BMW and Toyota vehicles.

The Toyota Supra is out of production, but it remains one of the Japanese automaker's most popular models with performance enthusiasts.

Edmunds says: It's a little bit of a letdown to hear that the Toyota Hybrid-R Concept will not be a new Supra.
