Although U.S. launch timing has not been spelled out, Ferrari North America said the car is coming here.
Pricing will be announced at the Frankfurt auto show, said Krista Florin, a company spokeswoman. Florin also said it has not yet been determined how many units will be allocated for North America.
In the meantime, Ferrari has launched a microsite that provides details about the car.
The Ferrari 458 Speciale is equipped with a modified version of the automaker's 4.5-liter V8 engine that churns out 596 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque at 6,000 rpm. In comparison, the base Ferrari 458 Italia delivers 562 hp.
Ferrari calls the engine the company's "most powerful naturally aspirated V8 ever." Florin said fuel economy estimates are not available at this point and Ferrari has not disclosed a top speed.
The Ferrari 458 Speciale sprints from zero to 62 mph in 3.0 seconds, according to the automaker. It has a dry curb weight of 2,844 pounds, a reduction of about 198 pounds compared to the base car.
Ferrari is promising that many of the "sophisticated solutions" in the 458 Speciale will "become a standard feature of all new Ferraris in the future."
It doesn't provide more future-product details beyond that. But the 458 Speciale puts a premium on active aerodynamics, with such touches as movable flaps that reduce drag and generate more downforce, a new rear diffuser and spoiler and new dual-exhaust system.
Ferrari says the combination of aerodynamic upgrades make the 458 Speciale "the most aerodynamically efficient range production car in Ferrari history." It also says the 458 Speciale has the highest lateral acceleration — at 1.33g — ever achieved by a Ferrari.
This latest iteration of the Ferrari 458 Italia takes aim at the 2013 McLaren MP4-12C.
Edmunds says: Don't be surprised if the price tag of the 2014 Ferrari 458 Speciale is well north of $250,000.
