FRANKFURT, Germany — The 2014 Mercedes-Benz GLA is being teased via two design sketches ahead of its formal debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show.

The sketches were released on the automaker's official Facebook account on Sunday.

"The new GLA is coming," said the text accompanying the sketches. "To tease you just a bit until then, enjoy these exclusive design sketches."

The sketches show a muscular compact crossover with bulging fenders, twin-pipe exhaust system and oversized tires. The production GLA bears a strong resemblance to the Mercedes-Benz Concept GLA that debuted earlier this year at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show. The 2014 GLA is expected to go on sale in the U.S. by fall 2014.

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz GLA targets the BMW X1 and is part of the growing number of Mercedes-Benz vehicles designed to capture a younger audience.

What is unclear in the new design sketches is whether the production car will feature the high-tech headlights that drew so much attention on the Concept GLA. Those headlights are fitted with a laser-beam projector that is capable of projecting pictures or videos onto a screen or other surface.

Mercedes-Benz also did not provide any technical specifications for the production GLA. The Concept GLA is equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 208 horsepower. The engine is linked to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Edmunds says: A first glimpse of what may be one of the most important debuts at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show.
