What Is It?
2014 Porsche 918 Spyder
What's Special About It?
Almost everything that can be said about the 2014 Porsche 918 Spyder has already been said. Or so we thought prior to its official world debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show.
If you're not familiar with how that stacks up against other super sports cars, here are a few times to compare it against. The original Lexus LFA only managed a 7:38, so Lexus went back and created a Nürburgring Edition model to knock it down to 7:15. The Corvette ZR1 was able to crank out a lap of 7:19, while the last-generation Dodge Viper ACR put in a time of 7:12. Even Porsche's own 911 Turbo S takes 7:26 for a lap.
So if it wasn't apparent enough already, the Porsche 918 Spyder is fast on a scale that makes other so-called supercars a little less super. In fact, at Porsche's press conference in Frankfurt, legendary test-driver Walter Rohrl said he was skeptical of the 918 at first, but the performance is so spectacular that the car won him over. And if Mr. Rohrl can learn to love a hybrid, we all can.
