HIROSHIMA, Japan — The all-new Mazda CX-5, a compact crossover that will square off against the popular Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4, has been unveiled ahead of its public introduction next month at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show. Mazda said the CX-5 will be "progressively introduced to global markets from early 2012."
The automaker describes the CX-5 as the "first of a new generation of Mazda products," built around the company's Skyactiv engines and transmissions and embodying Mazda's latest design theme, dubbed Kodo — Soul of Motion, previewed in the Shinari and Minagi concepts.
The CX-5 will come with a choice of Skyactiv high-compression, direct-injection four-cylinder engines, including 2.0-liter gasoline and 2.2-liter diesel units in standard and high-output variants, along with a choice of new Skyactiv automatic and manual transmissions.
Mazda said the Kodo design theme on the CX-5 features "a prominent new frontal treatment with a bolder Mazda family face and more dynamic styling that conveys a strong sense of vitality and agility."
