What Is It?
2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG

What's New About This Model?
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG is an all-new compact SUV built by the AMG, a division of Mercedes-Benz that builds high-performance vehicles. The GLA45 is based on the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA250 4Matic crossover which is also new to the company's lineup this year.

When Does It Go on Sale?
Mercedes-Benz said it expects to have the 2015 GLA45 AMG in showrooms in September 2014.

How Much Does It Cost?
No official pricing has been released yet, but we expect the GLA45 AMG will be priced similar to current high-performance compact SUVs which range from $40,000-$50,000.

How Does the GLA45 Compare to the GLA250 4Matic Crossover?
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG is faster and more powerful than the GLA250 4Matic. The GLA45 AMG churns out 147 more horsepower than the base GLA250 4Matic. It also has a faster 0-60-mph time, beating its more conventional counterpart by 1.6 seconds. The suspension is also firmer to improve handling.

What Kinds of Engines and Transmissions Does It Have?
Only one engine is offered in the GLA45, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that delivers 355 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque.

A seven-speed automatic transmission is standard. It features three driver-selectable transmission modes: Manual, Sport and Efficiency. Manual allows for manual control of the shifts by the driver while the Sport mode automatically shifts in a more aggressive manner. The Efficiency mode features a fuel-saving start-stop function that shuts off the engine when the car stops to conserve fuel.

What Unique Features Does It Offer?
An AMG Performance exhaust system is optional and features a distinctive engine sound.

An aerodynamics package adds sporty details, including a rear spoiler and carbon-fiber exterior touches.

What Kind of Standard and Optional Safety Equipment Is Offered?
All GLA45 AMGs come standard with ESP Curve Dynamic Assist, which is designed to help the driver steer precisely while cornering. The standard stability control system features three modes, including a sport handling mode that won't intervene during more aggressive driving maneuvers that might otherwise engage the system.

What Models Will It Compete Against?
BMW X1: The top-of-the-line BMW X1 xDrive35i has a 300-horsepower turbo six-cylinder engine and a six-speed automatic transmission, but is not as powerful or fast as the GLA45 AMG.

Porsche Macan: The base Macan S is equipped with a 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo engine delivering 340 horsepower, also falling short of the GLA45 AMG in the horsepower department. However, the Macan Turbo is equipped with a 400-horsepower twin-turbo 3.6-liter V6 engine.

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque: The Evoque is one of the style leaders in the segment, but it lacks the cachet of the AMG name.

Should You Wait for It?
Most Mercedes-Benz AMG vehicles come with a hefty price tag, but the 2014 GLA45 AMG should be one of the relatively affordable ones in the stable. If you've longed to get into this high-performance German club, it may be worth the wait.
