LOS ANGELES — Infiniti confirmed on Wednesday that its all-new sport sedan — widely expected to be the next-generation G Series — will make its formal debut on January 14 at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.

Infiniti also said that a "new direction for Infiniti" will be outlined on that date by Johan de Nysschen, Infiniti president. That shift is expected to include a new, more contemporary design language.

The debut of the Infiniti luxury sport sedan was said to be pulled forward from the 2013 Geneva Auto Show to underline the importance of the U.S. to Nissan's upscale brand.

The new compact sedan from Infiniti is expected to use a rear-wheel-drive platform. It is likely to get a V6 engine, as well as four-cylinder engines developed by Mercedes-Benz. Daimler and Renault/Nissan have agreed to share some platforms, engines and transmissions.

Daimler and Renault-Nissan in September said they will jointly develop and manufacture a turbocharged, direct-injection gasoline engine to debut in Daimler, Renault and Nissan vehicles in 2016. The new engine will feature state-of-the-art technology in a compact package that targets improved fuel economy.

The two also will share transmission technology as they expand their collaboration.

Edmunds says: Infiniti's perfectly timed announcement managed to steal some of the thunder from the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show.
