DETROIT — The 2014 Jeep Patriot adds a new six-speed PowerTech automatic transmission on some models and retains its starting price of $16,990.

The new six-speed automatic is optional on the 2014 Patriot Sport model and standard on the Latitude and Limited models.

On sale in the second quarter of 2013, the new Patriot is considered to be one of the value leaders in its segment. In comparison, a base 2013 Kia Sport starts at $19,800, including an $800 destination charge. The base 2013 Mazda CX-5 starts at $21,790, including a $795 destination charge.

The 2014 Patriot also gets new standard front side airbags, and a standard 158-horsepower 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine for the Sport and Latitude models.

Edmunds says: A new transmission is good news for the 2014 Jeep Patriot — and no price hike on the base model doesn't hurt, either.
