DETROIT — The 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo, with a significant 63-horsepower boost over the base Veloster, made its world debut on Monday at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show.

The Veloster Turbo will go on sale in the summer.

Pricing has not been announced, but it will be more expensive than the base 2012 Veloster, which starts at $18,075, including a $775 destination charge.

The Veloster Turbo gets a 201-hp turbocharged 1.6-liter gasoline direct injection four-cylinder engine linked to either a six-speed manual transmission or six-speed automatic transmission. The base 2012 Veloster is equipped with a 138-hp 1.6-liter gasoline direct injection four-cylinder engine linked to a standard six-speed manual transmission.

While the EPA has yet to post official fuel-economy numbers for the Veloster Turbo, Hyundai said it will get an estimated 27 mpg in city driving and 38 mpg on the highway. The base 2012 Veloster with a six-speed manual transmission returns 28 mpg in city driving and 40 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

Hyundai said the Veloster Turbo targets the Volkswagen GTI, the Honda Civic Si and the Mini Cooper/Clubman S.

The Veloster Turbo will feature the Korean automaker's first exterior Matte Gray paint, along with 18-inch alloy wheels with chrome inserts, unique front fascia, foglights and ground effects. It also gets a sport-tuned engine intake and exhaust note and sport-tuned steering. The base Veloster's trapezoidal center exhaust has been replaced by two circular exhaust pipes.

The Veloster Turbo is slightly longer and wider than the base model, although it rides on the same 104.3-inch wheelbase.

The cabin gets leather seats with the word "Turbo" stitched into the seatbacks. Heated front seats are standard on the Turbo model.

Edmunds.com says: Hyundai addresses the complaint that the base Veloster is underpowered with the debut of the Veloster Turbo.
