- The Beetle TDI debuts next week at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show.

VW said the 2013 Beetle TDI will be rated by the EPA at 29 mpg in city driving and 39 mpg on the highway.
The 2013 Beetle TDI is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder clean diesel with direct injection. The engine makes 140 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, and can be mated to either a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic with Tiptronic manual shift capability.
The car is distinguished from its gasoline-powered counterparts with a chrome trim line, TDI badging and unique 17-inch alloy wheels, plus an extra set of gauges, including oil temp and turbo boost.
VW will market the diesel-powered Beetle in three trim levels — TDI; TDI with Sunroof; TDI with Sunroof, Sound and Navigation. Standard features on all three variants include power windows, leatherette seats, leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, keyless entry with push-button start and an iPod interface.
Edmunds.com says: Depending on where the window sticker eventually lands, the latest incarnation of the Beetle Diesel could be embraced by Americans as a model of frugality if fuel prices shoot up dramatically over the next year or two.
