I have a 2002 Audi TT and this morning the Transmisson went out...After reading some of these posts, I am wondering if it needs to be replaced or just the lever slipping......My Audi makes a grinding noise when I put it into gear....Yes, I am a chick, i go by noises......HELP!
My 2002 TT had the same problem just after going out of warranty. Audi made good on the repair even though at the time it wasn't considered a defect in the US. At that time, in the UK, it was determined to be a defect and they replaced any defective units even those no longer under warranty. In less than a year after mine was fixed, Audi USA finally considered it ... Read More
I have 2002 TT coupe (hatchback) with 104,000 miles on it. I had no problems with the car until last year when the instrument cluster began to act up. The first indication something was wrong was the Temperature gauge suddenly started reading into the above normal range by one tick. Then it got worse and moved all the way to the far right (overheated) indication. I took the car in for ... Read More
I've had my 2002 TT since 2003, when I purchased it slightly used. It's had regular maintenance and not been driven hard, and it spends most of its time in a nice, heated garage. On Dec. 20th, the timing belt went at 59,000 miles and took out my head - 46,000 miles short of the 105,000 mile scheduled replacement in my owners manual. I was without a car for three weeks, ... I've got a 2002 Audi TT convertible and the rear window is separating from the top. It just happened today! The car is garage kept and has low miles. Did you ever come up with a satisfactory remedy for this problem. I called a local top repair and they want $1500 and said it's unrepairable. I saw on another post that a guy used rhino glue to repair his corvette.
I have some half-good news. I have a 2001 TT roadster, bought new, and the cluster failed under warranty and was replaced in 2002. The new cluster had the temp gauge off by one from the get go: when the car is started, instead of starting from the far left, it started one notch from the far left. Then when the car was warm, it'd sit one notch to the right ... Read More
But back in 2002 after driving Mercedes for the 12 years prior (a 1990 300E & a 1998 CLK 320), my Mom decided she HAD to have an AWD car. At the time the A6 was the only game in town. The Tiptronic transmission was always jerky & never shifted smooth. The dealer's service department (Palisades Audi) was worse than awful & kept telling my Mom that she was: imagining it, ... Big8pe, Congratulations on your decision to puchase the TT. I wish you the best of luck. They are good cars, and like any other, wear and tear will occur. Just service the car by the book and you should not have a problem. I plan on keeping mine indefinitely and making it a project car. The next mods should be a larger turbo, injectors and an intercooler. The car runs like ... Read More
floridacarwiz, thanks. I've agreed to purchase the car contingent on a mechanic's inspection. Car was in excellent condition and well-cared for. Guy has all maintenance records and has already replaced instrument cluster. My one concern is the timing belt. I cannot seem to get a straight answer either from him or dealership. He's had it inspected by Audi dealer at 60,000 and was told it was good for another six months ... Read More
The cluster went out a couple of times on my 2002 1.8 turbo all wheel drive. It always came back after I fiddled witht the fuses although never in direct response to my fiddling. Then about a month ago it went out in a big way, no tach, speedo, fuel or temp. Mmy TT is "too old" to qualify for the settlement so I am having it fixed by a garage ... Read More
I purchased my '02 Audi TT in 2005 and it had 12,000 miles on it and all of the maintenance was kept up religiously. I have continued to take it in for its regular service. I go to take it in for service at 65k miles and they want to change the timing belt. They also want to change some other things like the alternater "while they are in there". After ... Read More
I periodically check the Audi TT blogs/forums regarding this timing belt issue. I have a 2000 Audi TT coupe that I purchased in 2003 with 32,000 miles on it. My timing belt broke in June 2006 on my drive from Los Angeles to Houston, TX at 83,000 miles. All of the car's maintenance since I purchased it used in 2003 was performed by the Audi Downtown Los Angeles dealership, even the ... Read More
So, it cost $6139.58 to rebuild my engine, and the car still intermittently hesitates! All I can say is that I am disgusted. This thing better run forever now. My maintenance book clearly states that the belt should be replaced at 105K miles. I don't care what anyone says or what anyone knows, if that is not accurate Audi needs to inform its customers or take responsibility. Why the hell does ... Read More
OMG! I am soooo sick to my stomach. I live in NY and was at a training session in Enfield CT. I got in my car to go home, it started, I backed it out, it stalled and never started again. I had no idea it was the timing belt, we thought it was the battery so we must have cranked the engine dozens of times. Needless to say, my car ... Read More
Hello. I own a 2001 TT, 180 hp roadster. Have had to replace the instrument cluster in 2002 and now in 2007 it is acting up again. The fuel gauge does not correspond to actual quantity. Audi USA has refused to address this issue. The dealer offered to pay for half. This is not a solution. Thankfully my extended guarantee coverage does include this expensive repair. I suggest anyone with a ... Read More

I'm thinking about buying this car tomorrow. Haven't researched much. Car has 42k miles and looks very clean. Buying from 2nd owner. Has just had the 40k mile service done at an Audi dealer. Nearest dealer is 2 hours away. Would this stop you from buying? Paying $15100. Has aftermarket chrome wheels - looks great. Silver. No CD changer or Bose. Has heated seats.
My 2002 TT Roadster went through 5 batteries in less than 2 years. Dealers in both Chicago, Illinois and Sarasota, Florida, as well as Audi USA told me it was because I did not drive the car enough (12,0000 miles in 3.5 years). Contacted Audi-Germany. Problem apparently finally solved -- bad dash board control unit. Replaced under warranty. This should have been detected earlier, and I should not have been put ... Read More

ywilson1, From what I've been told (from Audi service manager), oil-burning seems to be a common problem with the TT's. My 02 225 TT (40k mi.)burns about 2 qts. about every 7-8k miles. I realize this is a problems and solutions discussion, but after reading all the negativity, I have to mention that my 2002 TT coupe, 180hp, has had great reliability and performance. After 25k miles, I still love the car, ... Read More
I hear what you're saying, but given the fact that Audi TT sales have fallen off the charts, I think it's time for something more aggressive. Although the 2004 models will soon be at your dealer, Audi is still selling leftover 2002 models! They've even had to go as far as calling brand new 2002 models "certified used cars". The TT is already a "niche" car and conservative upgrades won't help ... Read More

I recently purchased a 2002 coupe, 180FWD, so you'll know in advance where I'm coming from. I was looking for a comfortable car that I would enjoy driving, not necessarily the "ultimate" sports car, and the TT fits my expectations very nicely. From my research I would say that the majority of issues with the TT were on the 2000's, some on the 2001's, and the 2002's have been very reliable. ... Read More
I'm seriously considering the purchase of a 2002 Audi TT Coupe, 180 HP FWD (possibly the AWD) but I'm hesitant based on some owner-feedback. From what I heard, Audi is planning to add more engine options to the TT line-up but I am not sure if they'll be available in the 2002 model or would they even come to the US!
