Brilliant direct-injected 4.2-liter V8 makes all the right sounds and 420 hp. Handling and steering are generally very good, but the forward placement of the engine creates a bit of a nose-heavy feeling that translates into noticeable understeer when driven hard. Extra weight tempers the overall performance of the new convertible variant.
Audi's dynamic ride control, which links diagonally opposite front and rear dampers, provides the best ride comfort in this class. The RS4's sporting nature doesn't impair the luxurious feel of the interior. Seats are supportive and firm, but comfortable.
Excellent gauge layout compromised by awkward navigation interface and generally button-heavy design for many other controls. For 2008 a cloth power-convertible top model with 2-doors has been added. Rear seat space is diminished somewhat as a result.
Gorgeous fender flares and other performance oriented details beef up the standard A4 to look genuinely mean, although the effect isn't as pronounced on the convertible. As with most other Audis, you'll find consistently high quality interior materials and strong build quality.
High Performer
First and foremost the RS4 is a performance car. It's powerful, fast, handles well and makes all the right sounds.
Image Enhancer
The RS4 will get you noticed by the people who matter, but will still slip under the radar of those who you'd rather not have notice you.
Daily Commuter
Far from fuel efficient or economical transportation the RS4 could, nonetheless, be used as a daily driver -- and a darned fine one.
