Summary

What Edmunds.com says

For luxury car buyers who seek heightened utility without the added bulk of a full-blown SUV, Audi's allroad delivers excellent all-weather capability in an elegantly designed package.

Pros

Elegant interior, powerful engines, flexibility of adjustable-height suspension, competent off-road performance.

Cons

High base price, turbo lag in V6 version, suspension can be harsh over bumps, lousy fuel economy in city driving.

What's New for 2004

A 4.2-liter V8 version of the allroad debuts, sending 300 horsepower through the tall wagon's quattro AWD system. Other changes include an additional console power point and a satellite radio prep package.

Review

I've owned the car for 3 years and am living in central Idaho. We received 300+ inches of snowfall this year and have dirt roads to contend with in the summer. Aside from a couple of minor oversights, like front seat cup holder placements and a split rear seat that only folds one way, this wagon is arguably the best on the road. Coupled with a 6-speed manual gearbox and it delivers excitement at every shift.

Favorite Features

Styling, consistent handling on roads of any condition (snow, ice, dirt, asphalt), comfort. I average 23 mpg in blended driving.

Suggested Improvements

Audi should learn to offer the on-board computer with the enhancements like APR Tuned has mastered. Turbo lag in the V6 disappears and the car has the equivalent horsepower of the V8 with 93 octane. No complaints from me after the modification was made.

Although the EPA rates this car's mpgs at 19, I found that by being gentle on the gas I could usually get around 25. This was the greatest car I ever owned. Amazing in the snow.

Have driven and owned 14 Mercedes Benz cars since '86. My last MB was '06 ML 350. Bought my 1st Audi and it is perfect in every way. Our '04 Allroad is a CPO car in perfect condition. We are 2nd owner and I love driving it, it is an absolute blast. Gas millage is not very good, but I was not looking for an economical car. I probably will drive less 5000 miles per yer.

Favorite Features

Really like the design and features. I love fit and finish, the 2 tone interior, the Boss sound system, styling, and overall how good I feel when I'm behind the wheel.

Suggested Improvements

Paddle shifters, show what gear it is in when in "D" and "S" mode. Less turbo lag.

Review

We had a 2002 Discovery II. Loved the thing! After our son, the Rover was just too impractical. Looked at the Volvo Cross Country and the allroad. Our 04 allroad is the perfect combo. Awesome looks, super nice interior and a turbo! We've only had it for a few months but so far so good.

Favorite Features

Turbo, Bose system, adjustable height and very comfy.

Suggested Improvements

Better wipers, and the dreaded turbo lag (which is not a deal breaker).

This is such an amazing car, you can be flying down the highway at 120 mph in total comfort, then go offroading at 15 mph in the rocks and mud, go drive at 60 mph in the snow in total safety, and carry (inside) 10 feet long molding back from home depot. Very good canyon carver too. This is the ultimate SUV crossover. Does it all, does it well.
