Surprising Luxury and Performance

2014 Audi A8 L TDI quattro 4dr Sedan AWD (3.0L 6cyl Turbodiesel 8A)

I have owned Audi A8 sedans previously but switched to Mercedes S Class a few years ago - all of these high tech sedans can be problematic due to the complexity of their electronic systems - so be prepared to buy only from a dealer with 5 star service - recently, I was intrigued by the 2014 A8L TDI diesel sedan's specs and options so I acquired one - it does everything right, especially fuel mileage which surpasses my expectations - the A8L is "sized right" as compared to the lumbering S550 - the diesel performance is outstanding - the electronic gizmos are entertaining but most are not necessary for daily use - cons - lots of road noise from stiff tires, mediocre stereo, electronic failures

Favorite Features

Diesel fuel mileage is outstanding for such a heavy car - cruising on flat roads at 70MPH I achieved 38MPG for a 100 mile trip - performance from diesel torque is superior to most gas sedans - seating comfort and adjustability is world class - electronics can be entertaining with lots of options to personalize features - navigation system is one of the best available - dual sunroof has a mesh screen which lets some light through but not the sun's heat - exterior finish is flawless - high quality interior materials - the pop up MMI screen is very easy to read even in bright sunlight

Suggested Improvements

Bland exterior styling even by Audi's standards, especially the gapping front grille which looks like it could swallow a Prius with barely a burp - stiff tires might encourage high mileage but drum the cabin with annoying road noise at times - no body side strips to prevent parking lot door dings - door lock/unlock buttons are reversed in operation as compared to others - no tinted windshield or color band at top makes glare an issue on sunny days - shifter is confusing but you get used to it - can anyone make a tire monitoring system that does not pop off constantly

I'm interested in knowing if there is a down side to the diesel engine. Is there diesel smell in the garage? Is there any black film or sooting in the garage. Finally, since I live in the frozen north, are there any cold weather starting problems, or diesel fuel gelling problems? Thanks.
