Buying a used A8? Maybe mine, but not likely!
Written by: alandparker on Oct 21, 2006 2:58:11 AM
I HAVE owned this 2000 A8 (no L) since 2002. SEcond owner after off lease. First thing I did was take it to the local Audi dealer and look over every square inch. When I arrived to pick it up, he was visibally dissappointed that they had found NOTHING. I'd have to do some reasearch to get theEXACT figure below what you and would have expected for a purcchase price. . ... Read More

Used A8 feedback
Written by: monkstermann on Jul 4, 2006 9:47:36 AM
Hi all. I'm interested in purchasing a well maintained A8 circa 1997-2000 and was wondering if there were any iterations to stay away from. And if so for what reasons; i.e. earlier engine probs; electrical gremlins; abnormal tire wear, etc. etc. whatever. I currently have a 1993 S4 showing 280,000 on the odo and she still is a pistol. Don't ever see another one which I kinda like. Also, it's not ... Read More

Watch those A8 transmissions
Written by: vusic on Apr 22, 2006 10:30:13 PM
Purchased a 2000 A8L in June 2002 with Audi certified warranty. Loved the car. Then came 75K and no reverse. Have heard the warnings through this forum.....believe them and extend your warranties (if the cost makes sense). My transmission repair will run about $3400.00 (after the $570.00 it took to determine that I'd need to spend the $3400.00), from what I've read, that's not a bad deal. Big picture....the car's great, ... Read More

I sold a 1999 A8 standard wheelbase, one owner, always garaged, 42,000 mile car for $25K about one year ago. The 2000 A8L mentioned here sounds somewhat comparable. Repair costs of any German luxury car can be astonishing, for sure, but Audi is no more costly than the others.

My '06 Jaguar XJ Super V8
Written by: garysandiego on Mar 2, 2006 6:02:23 PM
I just wanted to chime in with my great experience with my '06 XJ Super V8. I am not a die hard Jaguar fan, have not dreamed about owning a Jag all my life. I did not intend to buy a Jaguar this time around. But having done so, I am really happy. Here is my story. I had owned a two Cadillac Eldorado STS from 1995 through 2000. I enjoyed ... Read More

Having the Maybach and S-Class virtually share taillights, or the C-Class and S-Class of a generation ago, is not a good thing, as it says cost-cutting to the trained eye. Yeah this is a good example. Now if this were true, why doesn't it mean the same thing for Lexus? Lexus is doing the same thing with design from model to model. Anyway, the cars you mention don't have the exact ... Read More

Well I'm back. I see I haven't missed anything, but 325+ posts about the same stuff we've been arguing about for years now it seems!! I may or may not go back through all of those posts to respond to some of the more curious items. Anyway, down to business. This year's NAIAS was without a doubt the best I've ever been too. The sheer number of new cars and stunning ... Read More

A8 into the mix
Written by: jpvwaudi on Jan 14, 2006 5:11:23 PM
The only reason A8 sales are slow is the supply factor. I've sold Audi since 2000. The demand has been phenomenal since the 04 redesign. 9 in 10 A8's are presold at my store; as we speak I don't even have an 06 for you to drive in my inventory. The only A8 I have in stock is my owner's 05 demo which we just put up for sale last week. ... Read More

It's just like I said before if you can't count all those taxi Mercedes, then you can't count all those so-called "Lexuses" running around in other countries as leathered up Toyotas. We disagree on what makes a "luxury" car obviously. Leather doesn't define it for me. I'm not trying to say you don't know what you're talking about here, but with the engine thing you really would benefit from doing some ... Read More

Yes, even I the survey detractor have to look at the Audi sideways, only because my own personal observations haven't been good concerning the V8 drivetrain in the A6 4.2 and the previous A8 with the same engine. They are known for drop their transmission from time to time, especially the A8. A friend of mine was looking at a 1998 C280 at a Audi dealership, but Audi couldn't sell him ... Read More

"In your opinion, what is Build Quality vs Reliablity? Are they mutually exclusive?" The short answer is no they aren't mutually exclusive. Lexus blends them very well, on the whole probably better than anyone else. I'm just guessing here, but I think you knew this, but wanted me to admit that? Anyway...with Audi they are exclusive traits. When you open the door of a A8, A6 or A4 you feel the ... Read More

It still doesn't make a difference if the LS430's "Euro" option doesn't cost anything because the S430 or S500 is still going to cost more anyway, so whats the difference? You're not comparing cars of equal specification. Thats like me saying the E500 Sport outhandles the regular LS430, that simply isn't a fair comparision. I really think you're making to broad of a statement when it comes to the press. They ... Read More

I have had my 1998 A8 4.2 for about a year now. I picked it up Audi Assured about a year ago. Since that time, there have been no really major problems with the car and love the car. Could just used a little more power....pre owned s8 here I come. Anyway I thought I would just clarify some of the problems that other owners have had and that I had. ... Read More

Get the A8
Written by: bertram60 on Nov 26, 2001 9:37:18 AM
By far the best sport sedan on the market. 2000 saw an increase in hp and decrease in weight (more aluminum used throughout), so they're a little quicker. Most definitely by whichever of these from a reputable dealer as these are both frighteningly complex and expensive cars to own and maintain. Brakes were the reason for my separation from my beloved '00 A8. I'd make sure the car was under Audi ... Read More

Ready for A8
Written by: automophile on Nov 13, 2001 7:52:21 PM
I have tested a lot of cars and owned a lot of cars. It seems that the only car to own for luxury, performance and some class is the A8. A current review liked the 750 better, but there is to much "stigma" associated with Beemers here in L.A. I've owned 4 Audis in the past, and look forward to another. The best deal seems to be a previously owned 2000 ... Read More

Phone for A8

I purchased a 2000 A8 from a friend loaded with every option including the phone. He got a 2001 S500 sport (and hates that he sold me his A8). I love his Star Tac phone feature(and Nav system which is also in my wife's ML430) and have checked with everyone about upgrading or changing the phone. According to my Audi dealer (Champion Motors) the 2002/3 will have a digital phone system. ... Read More

never heard of quattro breakage
Written by: audiaudiaudia8 on Nov 22, 2000 12:26:21 AM
I own a 2000 A8. My previous car was a 1986 Audi 5000 Quattro of which I was the third owner and which our babysitter now owns. I believe this quattro system is very similar to the A8's although it had manual locking differentials instead of automatic. The independent service shop owner here repairs many Audis dating back 15 years and had never had an instance of quattro breakage.

I think you may have a hard time finding a used 1-3 year old A8 from a private seller, with only around 2000 a year produced, and most being leased. I looked for two months, and found a 2 1/2 year old '97 A8 with 15K miles, from a dealer. The car was privately owned (verified through car fax). A salesman told me that Audi charges the dealership $500 for the ... Read More

RE 2000 A8
Written by: billmillsva on Dec 18, 1999 4:42:57 PM
Concerning the phone cradle, to my knowledge, Audi only offers one cell phone. It fits in the storage well under the arm rest (under, not in) and is only compatible with analog cell service. All A8's come prewired for this phone. Apparently Mercedes is offering a dealer installed digital cell phone (or possibly dual band?) now but since almost all the different digital carriers use different technologies I suspect you would ... Yes, Merc1, I am looking forward to the 2000 A8 and wish there was more info about it out there. I am told Audi intends to increase the horse power from 300 to about 365, in order to keep the A8 ahead of the new A6, which gets the 4.2 300 hp engine from A8 this year. I think the A8 is by far the most attractive car on the roads today. I don't find anything wrong with its shape. It is a very aggressive and serious car, but you have to look closely to see it. I've always been partial to european cars and drove Saabs and Volvos for years. My new A8 is my third Audi, and I'm ready to stop here. I can't imagine a ... Read More
