  • Re: How reliable is a used 2006/2007 A8? [djt21]

As the past owner of a 1999 and a 2005 A8, and now an S8, I can say that my experiences have always been favorable. However, I have not had a high mileage car, generally parting with them at around 50k miles or so. In spite of the car being more technologically advanced than the smaller Audis, it seems like they have fewer problems. I should add that my wife and ... Read More

I have had the same situation with the ignition key on my last two A8's (1999 & 2005). If my engine does not start on the first attempt, I have to remove the key and reinsert. This has been the case since they were new. I have been told, and since it has been the same on two cars now, I believe that this is designed into the car. Perhaps a ... Read More

I have owned 1999 A8 for past 6 years. Routine services had been with a local reliable mechanic as I lived 150 miles from the nearest dealer. I made the mistake of scheduling an oil change only with Dwight Jepsons Sunflower Audi in Topeka, Ks. I unfortunately didn't ask ahead of time what the price would be. It took 90 minutes for an oil change only (no other fluids, no wash ... Read More

I have nothing but praise for my 2005 A8. I felt the same about my former A8 (a 1999). My next car will be an Audi, as well. As for the high speed comfort and the ability to use the phone while driving, I am extremely pleased, with one minor exception. When I am on the open road between LA and points east, such as Albuquerque, I go briskly. With the ... Read More

You did not say where you live. A Mercedes here in LA often means nothing more than "I want people to think I have made it and I want one, too." Or to put it more bluntly, "Too many Benz owners don't know much about cars, but want desparately to impress others - - who don't know much about cars either." In my part of town, Mercedes is as common as ... Read More

I sold a 1999 A8 standard wheelbase, one owner, always garaged, 42,000 mile car for $25K about one year ago. The 2000 A8L mentioned here sounds somewhat comparable. Repair costs of any German luxury car can be astonishing, for sure, but Audi is no more costly than the others.

Yes there was a 6-cylinder 735i at one time from 1988-1992, just before the last S320 came out. The previous S320 made up 40 percent of S-Class sales during certain years from 1992-1999. The Audi S8 is/was performance model and doesn't "die" like you say it does. Its the same has MB not having an E55 from 1996-1998, or BMW and M5 from 1997-1999, those models always come a few years ... Read More

Wow ljflx you really need to do your research and make sure you know your facts before you speak. The A8 sales are not down at all...2004 finished with 5,943 units delivered in the US nearly 3 times as many as the previous A8 did in its best year of 1999. The handling of the car is absolutely amazing for a vehicle of its size. No nav system orders a person ... Read More

"In your opinion, what is Build Quality vs Reliablity? Are they mutually exclusive?" The short answer is no they aren't mutually exclusive. Lexus blends them very well, on the whole probably better than anyone else. I'm just guessing here, but I think you knew this, but wanted me to admit that? Anyway...with Audi they are exclusive traits. When you open the door of a A8, A6 or A4 you feel the ... Read More

It still doesn't make a difference if the LS430's "Euro" option doesn't cost anything because the S430 or S500 is still going to cost more anyway, so whats the difference? You're not comparing cars of equal specification. Thats like me saying the E500 Sport outhandles the regular LS430, that simply isn't a fair comparision. I really think you're making to broad of a statement when it comes to the press. They ... Read More

Interesting question, as we've discussed this before in this thread. I don't think we'll ever see those models here because of their price relative to the top line V8 versions of the 5-Series, A6, E-Class, S-Type, and the single car that bridges the gulf in between..the LS430. A six-cylinder of the 7-Series just wouldn't fly now, neither would an A8. The BMW is way too heavy and Audi has worked very ... Read More
