Does Audi want me?
Written by: cpeterson3 on Feb 3, 2005 7:36:28 AM
I must agree with a number of the recent comments made and would like to interject from a current buyers prospective. I am 3 months away from the termination of my ’02 A4 lease and was up until recently, looking forward to the ’05 A6 as my next car. As has been well documented, the launch of the A6 has been less than spectacular bordering on non-existent. I first saw the ... Read More

Here in NYC and surrounding communities we've seen an explosion of Audi's over the years. When I first leased one in 1999 they were not as prevalent as they are now. I believe the euro/dollar exchange rate has something to do with their current marketing strategy in the USA. Maybe they think the dollar is going to reverse and increase in value against the euro. Better to sell more cars later ... Read More

Tiptronic Lag. This condition, called tip-lag, has been discussed and discussed to death, here and elsewhere -- it has been a topic in the Quattro Quarterly, a publication of the Audi Car Club of NA. FWIW, this condition is not an Audi-only condition. Scant better that makes me feel. Hence I am now off the fence again and thinking I just cannot take another auto transmission (my 1997 A8, ... Run away from this scenario. The 2.7T is a great performing engine -- the 2001 may have some parts issues that, although probably able to be CPO'd to 100K or 2 years, still makes a newer car less money. The brake rotors on the 2001's are notorius for warping. The 2.7T engine will need a serpentine belt replacement by 60K miles (this is a four figure job). Around 60K miles, maintenance ... Read More

Of the cars since 1977 we have had, we leased the majority of them -- longest term, as I recall, 36 months, shortest 12 months (I leased a 1999 A6 for 12 months when I was coming upon 50,000 miles on my 1997 A8 while I was waiting for my 2000 A6 4.2 to arrive). My last Audi I leased for 30 months, the current one 36 months since I was ... Read More

Nice to hear that some people have had much better luck than I have with the A6. Maybe they just didn't get the bugs out until latter models as I know many with 1998,1999 and 2000 models with similar reliability problems and some with even worse issues.... and Audi not willing to do anything about it.....anyway my household had been poisoned by this experience and my wife has made it clear ... More Winter TIres
Written by: max27t on Dec 11, 2002 10:13:03 AM
Mark, Tim, and Joel, thanks for your comments on the tires. I am comfortable with my decision to use winter tires, but open to second-guessing on whether the Q was the right selection. Nokians are not as well known as Blizzaks, but I have used and liked them for 10 years. This is the fourth set I've bought. Two of those went with the car when we sold it, and only ... Read More

Northland is a very good dealership. And, I try to be a good customer. I inform the service manager of my issue, he checks it out -- he makes the determination of what needs to be done. I have written AoA to praise the dealer and its employees by name whenever appropriate (which is probably at least once or twice a year). I give the dealership a 5 (out of 5) ... Read More

1999 A6 Quattro

Picking up a fully kitted-out '99 A6 Quattro this Tuesday, after much research and some useful comments from you guys a couple of months ago. As expected, drove beautifully. Test drove it on a wet Houston day - pushed it around corners and stuck to road like glue. Takes some time to get up and go, but once going, really moves. Just like everyone says! 3.0 vs. 2.7t, for Max....
Written by: morphie on Apr 29, 2002 3:31:43 PM
This is an important comparison, which has had far too little discussion. We all seem to get wrapped up in the 4.2 and 2.7t; that is understandable, as they represent the current pinnacle of A6 performance. The 3.0, as compared to it predecessor, the 2.8, is a revelation: much better torque, top end power, etc. The seat of the pants feel is even more remarkable: this engine, if marketed against the ... 2002 A6 3.0
Written by: morphie on Apr 29, 2002 8:02:01 AM
I think that Bradd's comments (especially his Mom's), are quite intriguing. We have a 2000 2.7t and a 2002 A6 3.0. The suspension of the 3.0 is noticeable firmer than the 1999 A6 2.8 which preceded it. However, I find it acceptable, especially on rough New England roads. While the steering may be over boosted to some, it is less so than the 1999, and comparable to our 2.7t. As for ... Read More

New to this forum and about to move to TX from Australia! Looking at buying a 1999 A6 for interior size (I'm 6'5" tall), comfort and handling. Scrolling through everyones discussion, seems there are quite some reliability issues! This was surprising. Our last several A6's have been 1999's and, now, a 2002. While the cars have been quite pleasurable, each has suffered from some problems, primarily electrical. The most recent acquisition, a 2002 A6, has 5,500 miles. It was in for a minor body repair; out of an excess of caution, I asked for the car to be put through the electronic diagnostic. It indicated a problem with the exhaust camshaft. When ... Read More

The 4.2 is faster, the 2.7T is quicker -- yet, in the US, they are equally fast as they are top speed limited to 130mph. The differences between the cars is principally one of "feel" -- to me the 4.2 feels even more solid than the 2.7T (this is due, in part, to the fact that the car despite extensive use of aluminum IS HEAVIER), consequently it is very very smooth ... Written by: peteri1 on Dec 5, 2001 7:13:59 AM
In Illinois (11/21) I received lease quotes for both the A6 4.2 and the 540i. Audi is calling it at 54% residual at 39 months and BMW at 60% at 36 months. I believe BMW may be subsidizing since the model is in its last year of the cycle. The CNN comments apply to the 98 A6 which was the 2.8 derivative, prior to the release of the 2.7T and the ... I also have a few observations on your impending choice. First, both Mark and Tim have rendered good advice. I have no ownership experience with the 4.2. My familiarity is limited to the A6 2.8 and the 2.7T. The 1999 A6 was an Avant; it has been replaced with a 2002 A6 3.0. The difference is striking. 4.2 congratulations and winter tires....
Written by: morphie on Oct 2, 2001 1:27:09 PM
The A6 4.2 sounds like an ideal choice; I wish you many years (if ownership) or months (if lease) of enjoyment. Quattro compensates, up to a point, for winter conditions; it apportions what traction you have in a far more sophisticated manner than non all wheel drive. Traction, in the engineering sense, comes from the tires interaction with the road surface. In other words, if you are as fond of your ... Read More

Audi/VW Platforms

Virtually all of my Audis have had brake squeaks. The 1999, 2000 and 2001 have been the only exceptions (A6 2.8, A6 4.2, A6 4.2 in that order). Regarding the pedal issue only my 4.2's have had spongy pedal feel -- since I do not know if your A6 is a 2.8 or 2.7T/4.2, I don't know if my experience is meaningful. Tire size and other things jk
Written by: markcincinnati on Jul 12, 2001 6:34:19 AM
JK Ralph, at Northland Audi in Cincinnati, told me the 2002 A6 2.7T has a great deal of the look of a 2001 A6 4.2 -- flared front fenders, below the grill spoiler/air intake, etc. Now this tells me that it would be possible for the tire size to be 255 x 40 x 17. But, based on past experience with Audi's, they will probably have a somewhat smaller tire -- ... Read More

The Audi A6 models 2.7T and 4.2 use different brakes than the 2.8. I had a 1999 A6 2.8 quattro, kept it about 15,000 miles and never any problems with the brakes. I then leased a 2000 A6 4.2 -- new rotors were required at 1,000 miles -- they chattered and purred and vibrated from mile 1. option configurations changed between model years?

So what did Audi do with their option packages, from 1999 to 2000? I have a 2000 A6 Avant. No auto dimming mirrors included with the sunroof package, as compared to the '99 model year. Personally, I don't care about memory seats, or an ability to change station channels on the steering wheel. But the lack of the auto dimming mirrors is annoying. It seems absurd to have a car in ...
