  • Safety
  • Pros

Available all-wheel drive, powerful engines, sharp handling.

  • Cons

    Prices shoot up with options.

  • What's New for 2002

Audi's entry-level sedan and wagon are all new for 2002. Along with a redesigned body structure and new sheet metal, the new A4 receives a variety of changes to make it sportier. It is motivated by either a 170-horsepower 1.8-liter turbocharged four or a completely new 3.0-liter 220-horsepower V6, which can be mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Making its debut this year for non-quattro models is a continuously variable transmission (CVT), also known as multitronic. An in-dash six-disc CD changer and a dual-zone auto climate control top the standard features list.

Transmission killer

Vehicle: 2002 Audi A4 3.0 Fwd 4dr Sedan (3.0L 6cyl CVT)

I love the way this car looks, feels and drives, however... We just put in our third new replacement transmission!! The car has been in the shop for 4 months out of the last two years. The mechanic had to order the tranny from Germany as they are on back order in the US. The transmissions are about $7000 a piece. Thank God for extended warranties!! Buyer beware.

Vehicle: 2002 Audi A4 3.0 Fwd 4dr Sedan (3.0L 6cyl CVT)

I love this car!! After owning it for 4 1/2 years, I still feel the same as when I purchased it new. It has the sports suspension which handles very well. This vehicle is the first automatic transmission I have owned, therefore, having the CVT transmission has been wonderful. There is no hesitation when going through the gears upon acceleration and is smooth as can be. The seat is comfortable and the ride is quiet. The stiffer sports suspension is exactly what one expects from BMW. This car has had NO electrical or engine problems and is very reliable. A new dealership which opened closer to my home (after owning my car for 2 years) is top notch; offering car washes, and prompt service.

Vehicle: 2002 Audi A4 3.0 Fwd 4dr Sedan (3.0L 6cyl CVT)

What a fun car to drive, with the manumatic shifter! The fun of a standard, but also the ease and convenience of an automatic transmission. My only complaint about this car is the relatively small amount of storage - pockets in the doors and on back of the front seats, but hardly any room for CDs or sunglasses.

Sorry for those of you who have had trouble. Maybe the A4 3.0 engine is little more friendly. I wouldn't trade mine for much of anything else on the market. One draw back, back seats lack room.

Solid, safe & fun

Vehicle: 2002 Audi A4 3.0 Fwd 4dr Sedan (3.0L 6cyl CVT)

My first luxury car was worth the wait. Solid car, feels safe to drive and has the features to back up the claims. Fit & finish excellent inside and out. 3.0L engine with the CVT is smooooth and fast. I love the extra power it delivers at high speeds, passes others without straining. Amazing car for the money. Drove the BMW-3 and chose the A4 for FWdrive and price. My wife wouldn't drive this car for the first 1 1/2 years, too powerful. Now I can't get it back from her.

Vehicle: 2002 Audi A4 3.0 Fwd 4dr Sedan (3.0L 6cyl CVT)

I gave my boss and some other coworkers a lift the other day, and my boss was impressed. "this is a great car. I'm amazed at the interior." It is a great car. I looked at BMWs, Volvos, Saabs, etc., for style, safety, and performance. The A4 has it all. It's a toy and it's a statement. For safety, I don't think it can be beat. On my way home tonight, a Jeep Cherokee ran a red light. It was rainy, the roads were slick, I was at speed and yet the Audi prevaled. I braked and swerved; my A4 steered right around that Jeep like I was dancing with butterflies. I am fast becoming one of Audi's best salespersons.
