Thanks for the advice, I'll buy an Audi filter tomorrow and put it on and cross my fingers. Appreciate it. On another point is it very difficult replacing the window washer bottle. It looks like it does not just slip right out.

Bingo! DONT USE aftermarket oil filters with an Audi engine! I bet if you put the Audi filter in, your noise will go away or diminish.

"Is the K&N over kill..." No, it's simply a complete waste of money, just keep using factory filters. Period, full stop, the end. "...and should I have gone with a thicker oil?" Nope, the Mobil 1 0W-40 is perfect for your car. Best Regards, Shipo

Audi A4 1.8 2001 Cam follower or Lifter startup clatter
Written by: pchi on Jul 2, 2007 7:42:47 PM
have a 2001 A4 1.8, 87K miles, that on start up has a cam follower clatter for about 6 seconds or so, just started this a few weeks ago. I know these lifters have a tendency to seep oil and thus need to be reoiled on start up but how do you pin down which lifter or lifters needs replacing and what would the time be to replace the faulty part. ... Re: Update - Clutch failure at 30K [shom1]
Written by: inds_flames on May 31, 2006 7:37:13 PM
My clutch also failed at 40K miles on my 2001 A4. Dealer stated that pressure-plate was cracked and replaced it under-warranty (always took car to same audi dealer; previously had 80k on Saturn with original clutch). Now 2nd Audi clutch failed after ONLY 30k miles! (Audi service drove car 1-day before failure and reported NO problem); took to performance engine shop who verified broken pressure plate & worn-out clutch disk. I ... Read More

Re: lost without owner's manual [mason3]

Mason: Why don't you call the Audi dealer service department and ask them? I wouldn't drive around with the engine oil light on. At a minimum you should make sure that you have enough oil and then take the car in to get checked by a qualified mechanic. If you have enough oil quantity, and the oil light remains on, then you most likely have an oil pressure problem, and that ... Read More

This is my first German car (always drove Japanese, Toyota, Lexus, Nissan). As for the feel, drivebility and egornomics of the car, The A4 is a blast. Hey! Sorry about your luck. Not sure what the knocking/tapping noise could be... Wanted to ask you about your gas pedal response issue. Currently own a 2001 Audi A4 2.8L Quattro. When I first start the vehicle and place it in drive, I go to take off, and with my foot steady on the gas, the rpm's jump up and down. Almost seems like the engine cuts out for seconds at ... Clutch failure at 30K miles
Written by: shom1 on Mar 29, 2006 6:35:06 PM
My clutch just failed at 30K miles on my 2001 A4. I drive 85% freeway. Dealer wants $2245 and Audi has refused to contribute. Out of warranty by 7 months. Any advice? I plan to sue in small claims because I think any car should have an implied warranty to not wear out at 30K.

Problems and Solutions
Written by: tcasboy on Dec 31, 2005 3:59:32 PM
My main problem was that the 4 year/50K warranty and maintenance contract expired on my 2001 A4. My solution was to trade in the car before it started to eat me out of house and home. The Audi was a great car to drive, but there were just too many nits and noids that always needed attention (electrics, door seals, brakes groaning, cricket like noise from the engine compartment) that I ... Ok, these posts about timing belts are truly scary. I have a 2001 A4 2.8 quattro w/ 97k miles. I was told, by both the audi dealer and a local mechanic that I trust, that the timing belt for an 01 2.8 quattro should be replaced at 105,000 miles. Has anyone with a 2.8 had a problem with a timing belt failing before 105k miles? All of the posts about failing ... Read More

Coolant temperature sensor or not?

I had an orange warning light up on the dash of my 2000/2001 1.8 A4 and nowhere in the handbook is it mentioned. Fortunately my neighbour is a mechanic and told me it is supposed to illustrate the shape of an engine and it is the engine management system reporting a problem somewhere. Unlike on Volvos where it is possible for anyone to interrogate their system and identify faults from a ... Read More

A4 Warm Engine Starting

My 2001 Audi A4 Quattro with a 2.8 engine has a starting problem when it has been driven and then has been allowed to set for about 2 hours. I'm barely able to get it started after cranking it until the battery is almost dead. Sometimes I have to wait several hours to allow the engine to cool. This does not happen all the time but often enough to be troublesome. ... Read More

Yes, there was a class action suit. I believe they will now check the timing belt at 40,000 and 80,000 miles, and if it goes prior to that time they will fix it for free as long as you've had regular scheduled maintenance from an authorized Audi service dealer. BUT, they won't fix any damage from the belt after it blew if you didn't have it serviced appropriately. You can call ... Read More
