My son has a 1996 Audi A4 Quattro - 2.8L V-6 with over 160K on the clock. He bought it thinking that is was a solid car and still had several miles left in it. Wrong decision - it has been a money pit. Anything with much over 100K on it is prone to be a maintenance nightmare. Audi's are difficult for the typical DIY's and parts on the older models ... Well the residual values are set by leasing companies and are sometimes set high in order to push cars out of the showroom. My feeling/intuition is that once out of warranty, the resale value of Audis does not match that of its competitors, BMW and Benz, but I haven't thoroughly researched this pricing pattern. Perhaps other have and can contribute? Interesting you mentioned this...I just saw a very clean, but very ... Read More

Did you change your oil recently and did you use a non-Audi oil filter or some budget quick-change filter? If so, this can be a problem with the V-6 engine and induce valve noise. Just an outside chance---it has happened. That is correct---there are no adjustments to the valves, so it's possible you have defective lifter or lifters, or a worn camshaft. Please check your oil level and if you're due ... Read More

I have been noticing increasing valve chatter coming from the engine area, to the point that when I drove home one day, my wife thought she heard a diesel engine in the car. Hello, jkuebler The reply from gdb20 suggests a wheel bearing, which I would tend to agree with. However, I'm not a big fan of dealerships, even though some of them perform good work. Audi maintenance costs are VERY high and Audis definitely have maintenance issues. The 1.8 engine is a good engine but it is not a fast engine with the automatic. Although I must say that despite the problems I have had with Audi's automatic transmissions, I did enjoy my 1997 A8, 1999 A6 2.8, 2000 A6 4.2, 2001 A6 4.2 and 2003 allroad. Only the allroad of this group of Audis that has been parked ... Read More
Here is what the guy is offering: 1999 AUDI A4 Quattro, 82k mi, black, 5 spd, V6, pw, pdl, sunroof, 6 disc CD changer, ABS, immac in/out, $15,000 I Carfaxed it and it checks out. Has the leatherette interior. Anything to look out for? I'm going to look at it tomorrow. I also think probably more like $14000-14200. Thanks for any info.
At the risk of whatever, I would like some follow up, please. The cost of the Audi extended warranty -- the amount of the check I would have to write to make my Audi have the extra warranty (2 years or 100,000 miles) beyond the factory warranty is about $1,000. If one had purchased a 3 year old Audi that had 50,000 miles on it, it would be "worth" around 45% ... Read More
I am thinking about buying a 1999 1.8T Q with automatic transmission. Off lease and has 33000 miles. After test drive noticed: 1)front tires significantly less tread than rear. Outside tire treads worn more than inside on both front tires. Tires are goodyear eagles 2)Road noise is noticeably loud for this type of car on highway. 3)Little scratches all over. (car wash?) 4)At start of test drive, heard brakes make a ... Read More
Question, ... how can the dealers afford this? Using edmunds and doing some homework I was able to get a 1999 A4 2.8 quattro with only 33,000 miles on it and Audi Certified. It also came with the cold weather package, Bose cd change and sport package, heated leather seats, moonroof, etc. for only $20k.. Yup! $20k exactly. $4k below edmunds TMV for this particular certfied audi. Substantiably less than other ... Read More
I'm thinking of getting a 1998 or 1999 Audi A4 Quattro (2.8L). Does one have less problems than the other. Do these cars last long. Should I pay a couple thousand dollars more for lower mileage or is an A4 with 60 000 miles ok.
Hi everyone, I am new to Edmunds townhall and never owned an Audi. I have found a local independant dealer with off lease A4's directly from Audi. Here is an example. early 1999 A4 1.8 Q, 5 speed, Leather, loaded, sport wheels, 36k miles, $17,900!!! Price seems very good. I would have a pre purchase inspection and he is OK with that. I have heard about the control arm issues and ... Read More
hi andy, i was refering to a guy who found 1999 audi a4 turbo with 37000 miles for 21000 dollars it simply doesnt make sense to spend that kind' of money when u can buy a brand spanken new car with warranty
The A4 1.8T -- elsewhere, but NOT in the US -- can be had with leather, sat nav, power seats, and other amenities (aka options) that for some reason are deselected by AoA. I would think that allowing all possible options (for a given family, e.g., A4, A6, etc) would increase sales, increase market share, etc. Let me tell you about something I did last night: I went on-line to the ... Mark I was asking if you were refering to the engine described on the Audi Web site below which isn't currently available in NA cars. I asked because in the description below it isn't turbocharged. Note that it says that it has a balancer shaft for "excellent refinement". This is a additional shaft that is increasing being placed in engine configurations that aren't inhernetly balanced such as inline fours and v-6's. ... Read More
Thanks for the advice, markcincinnati. I have considered the Jetta, but found that the style of older Jettas doesnt appeal to me. I do agree though, that i could probably find a newer year VW (or other brand) for the amount of money that im willing to spend (and am currently looking for a 1999 and newer Jetta now... tough luck to me finding one at my price range though). Btw, ... Read More
I recently made my first purchase of a Audi vehicle. I purchased 2002 A4 3.0 6sp quattro, Crystal blue met. I traded in a 1999 VW Passat so I had a German feel to that vehicle, but the A4 raised that feel to the next level. I also opted for the xenon lights and bose upgrade and premium package, however no sport package. I have about 1200 miles on the car ... Read More
