You can also take a hacksaw blade and cut through the bolt right in its center (where the cable end pinches together). Don't go pounding on the battery, you'll damage it. If this is the Positive post, be careful that the hacksaw doesn't touch anything metal as you work. Wear safety glasses. But yes, rust penetrant, patience and maybe some vice grips are the best way to go.

Simplest way is to go to auto parts or hardware store and buy what is called "penetrating oil" ("Liquid Wrench). Apply it liberally (but don't overdo it) to the threads and base of the bolt where the nut joins it. Let it soak in overnight and then reapply. Key is to give it time to soak in and work on dissolving and penetrating the rust. If you have the room, you ... Read More

I have had two A6 4.2's one of them I have now, a 2001 A6 4.2 sport. I have test driven several A6 2.7T's -- one of them extensively and it had the 6spd manual. The 4.2 feels more solid and even though I know the 2.7T is quicker, the differences are not that great. Based on what I think I know now, I will probably end up with an '03 ... Read More

Unless Audi has a different rear side airbag setup than other manufacturers, the reason most folks do not order said rear side airbags is that they are at best dangerous to small children and at worst deadly. When I ordered my 328i back in 1998, I researched the issue and found that by default, BMW de-activates them at the factory, and then, for activation, you must sign a release for the ... Read More

Does Anyone know what "service INSP" display means ? I have an Audi a4 1998 Quattro. I thought it was an oil change, so I changed the oil, but the INSP is still displayed.. I cant seem to find anything on it in the manual. Any help would be appreciated. Thx...Mickey

I agree that the 02 A4 will have it's own issues, however these will surely be handled by the Audi Advantage warranty. The problem with the Jetta was the # of posts that I read for recurring issues. Things reported in 1998, that are still happening today, like bad window regulators, check engine lights repeatedly comming on, seats that seem to shake/rattle while drive, break fade and etc. I'm not knocking ... Hi, I'm Josh from Houston. I am very near trading in my 95 325 BMW for a new car and have been looking at the A4. I actually came close to buying a used one I got a great deal on in 1998 when I bought my BMW, but the color was not for me so I didn't do it. The other day I was at Momentum Audi in Houston and ... I am thinking about getting back with Audi because I believe that I can get it for less than my BMW 323i, as well as the new A4's body looks pretty cool. I have already had a A4 1.8T, but I certainly was not happy with the performance - that's because turbo did NOT do much in a hot Miami climate. I guess that intercoler or something like that may have ... Read More

Hi all, I'm considering buying a 1998 model with 23k. Has anyone had any experience with this model, good or bad? I currently drive a 1990 Audi 80, and although I love the car, it has had a lot of weird problems! Thanks!

Funny. I could have sworn there was a reply to your post in here just 1-2 days ago from somebody else. I drove the A4 for a 100-mile commute from the out-of-town Audi dealer shortly after I had purchased it, and it drove just fine. It might take a little while to get accustomed to the firmer seats, but they are quite comfortable for the long trips. It is also reasonably ... Read More

Thanks for filling me in with some info regarding the A4 changes for 1998. I should have been able to guess about the "atmospheres" introduction, but I didn't know there were several changes for 1998.5 models. It is interesting how Audi (and I guess VW) provide so many updates in mid-year. I believe the indash CD player was added for 1999.5. For 2001.5, Audi added the "Celebration Package", as well as ... Back in 1996 the basic black 4-spoke steering wheel was the standard A4 steering wheel, but Audi also also offered a 3-spoke thickly-padded "Sport" steering wheel (with the chrome ring logo) as an option. I believe it was a $150-$180 option. I'm sure that was also the case for the 1997 models. I'm not sure if this changed for 1998 or not. For 2000 and 2001, there is a 3-spoke thickly-padded ... I have a 1998 A4 1.8T Quattro that is on lease until April 2001. However, the warranty is up in January (3 years). I am thinking of buying the car at the end of the lease, but I am hesitant because the warranty will be up, although I can get an extended one, and I hear that these Audi's are very expensive to fix. I'd like to hear all of your ... Read More

How long is the manufacturer's warranty for the 2001 A4. I think I read 1 year which surprised me, as my 1998 SAAB (the lease is almost up) has a three year warranty. It's great, because I have a three year lease and haven't spent a dime on the car for repairs. Thanks for the help.

Now I've been told that an Audi 1.8T that has a chip in it (which costs only a few hundred dollars)will out perform any 2.8 since a V6 only has a minimal increase if it has been chipped. I am very close to making a decision, however,I am in need of performance, I love the way Audi looks, but will either of these cars inspire me or impress me.....chipped or not. ... Read More
