EDITORS' RATINGS OVERALL SCORE:

Overall

RATING

Base-priced between $26,000 and $35,000, the A3 is sometimes criticized for being costly for its small-wagon size, but it's densely packed with Audi's penchant for design and functionality. No matter which model, the A3 is fun to drive and stylish to boot.

DETAILED EDITORS' RATINGS

Dynamics

RATING

With a choice of either a 200-hp turbo inline-4 or a 250-hp V6 under its hood, a choice of a traditional manual transmission or Audi's slick auto-clutch paddle-shift manual and front- or all-wheel drive, the A3's dynamic range tends toward sporting rather than pedestrian. The standard suspension is entirely capable, but the optional S line sport package (standard on the 3.2 Quattro model) sharpens the A3's handling and ride. In any form, the A3 is fun to drive and earns decent fuel economy, too.

Comfort

RATING

The standard suspension is entirely livable, but be ready for additional road noise and ride harshness with the optional S line sport package (standard on the 3.2 Quattro model). Front and rear seats are comfortable; upgraded versions are more so. Within the relatively specialized "hatchback" segment, rear passengers will be happy to find four doors rather than just two, easing entry/exit.

Function

RATING

Functionally, the A3 ranges from above average to high-end with an impressive list of standard equipment, plus options like upgraded bi-xenon headlamps, DVD-based navigation, iPod integration, a dual-pane glass roof and a thorough cold-weather package. In terms of hauling cargo, the rear seats fold down to expand rear volume from about 12 to 20 cubic feet. Operation of all interior switchgear is on par with all Audi products, which is to say very good and often benchmarked by other manufacturers.

Design/Build Quality

RATING

Americans will find the A3 a right-sized well-proportioned small wagon, built to the standards expected from Audi. The A3's exterior or interior rivals or surpasses any other manufacturer in terms of design and build quality.

DETAILED PROFILE:

Daily Commuter It's nice to have a sporty four-door commuter hatch with (or without) all the high-end creature comforts available to other, even more pricey Audi products.

High Performer Regardless of which A3 model we test, we find ourselves driving with a little more enthusiasm. S line and Quattro options are icing on the cake.

Comfortable Even with the sport-tuned S line tire/suspension package, the A3 remains pleasant and comfortable nearly all the time.

Cargo Hauler As an alternative to a small SUV or crossover, the A3 won't measure up. Against a small sedan, however, it'll haul more cargo and still drive like a really fun car.
