What's New for 2014
The 2014 Aston Martin Rapide, which is now called the "Rapide S," gets a bigger, more prominent grille. Behind it is an updated V12 engine. The Rapide S is also slightly cheaper than last year's model.
Introduction
In the few years since Aston Martin introduced the Rapide sedan, the British automaker has quieted critics and purists who believed a grand touring sports car should come with two doors and no more. Mostly, the Rapide proved that versatility can exist in harmony with exceptional luxury, performance and prestige. For 2014, that trend continues with the Aston Martin Rapide S.
Starting things off for the 2014 Aston Martin Rapide S is an updated V12 engine that swells to 6.0 liters (from 5.9) and delivers 17 percent more power, now up to 550 horsepower and 457 pound-feet of torque. Aston says that's enough to propel the Rapide S from zero to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. Fuel economy is said to be better, too, rising from the current rating of 13 mpg city/19 mpg highway. As before, a six-speed automatic driving the rear wheels is the only transmission available.
With its engine seated lower to the ground and an adaptive suspension carried over from the previous car, the Rapide S also promises even crisper handling and dynamics. But a more dramatic change is set for the car's styling, which is highlighted by a larger, full-face aluminum grille. It won't suit everyone, and that probably includes many traditional Aston buyers. But the 20-inch wheels offer a low-profile classic design, and a cabin swathed in leather upholstery and surfaces and walnut trim will be familiar to Aston aficionados. Options will include carbon exterior trim, red and black leather upholstery and personalized sill plaques.
Even with the power and design changes, Aston hasn't stretched the Rapide S, so expect a similarly tight backseat and some contortions when passing in and out of the rear doors.
Available this spring and starting around $200,000, the 2014 Aston Martin Rapide S actually rings in more cheaply than the outgoing Rapide. Aston says changes in market and currency exchange make the slight discount possible, but the Rapide S will still keep its distance from models like the 2014 Maserati Quattroporte and Porsche Panamera.
