Japanese vs Germans
Written by: markcincinnati on Oct 10, 2011 1:57:25 PM
At the price point and at the "class" (ELLPS) we are talking about, the value leaders remain Infiniti and Acura. More content and by some definition, I'm sure, more car for the money when you're comparing Infiniti to BMW (which seems to be the comparison that "everybody" makes); I think I'll compare Acura to Audi, for the time being -- it seems somehow to work for me. The G37XS was a ... Read More

No, it takes one day to install the back-up sensors. I live in Cincinnati, the purchasing dealer (where I also purchased the sensors from, and incorporated them into the lease now that they can be capitalized) is in Columbus. 100 miles separate these cities. I travel EVERY Saturday to Columbus. The arrangement was this -- drop off the car, pick up the loaner, then pick up the car the following Saturday. ... Read More

Short answer, no. At this point, an Audi A4 2.0T Prestige + SLine with everything on it except ADS would be a great car. I have ADS, I have, currently both a 2009 A4 Prestige + Sport Pakage (that has ADS) and a 2012 Acura TL Advance. In 2009 but not in 2011 or 2012 Audi A4 2.0T Prestige + Sport or SLine packages, I see less of a need for ... Read More

. . .I can tell you that the Acura is not an Audi (DOH!) but as mine is equipped (2012 TL SH-AWD Advance Package), it is a capable car. Believable as an EL Luxury Performance Sedan -- totally believable. It would be more believeable if Acura had chosen the best available Ultra High Performance A/S shoes instead of the "OK" Goodyear RS-A's. My 2009 Audi A4 was special ordered with the ... Read More

Thanks for the congrats -- here is the Buying Story. I found a website called CARWOO.COM -- which, for a one time fee, allows you to locate and price a car without revealing your identity. Unlike competing web sites that do essentially the same thing, CARWOO takes money ONLY from the buyer, not from the seller (unless, of course they are lying.) I paid $148 which allowed me to send queries ... Read More

I am pretty well convinced that my 2012 TL will outperform my 2009 A4 2.0T, too. The Audi, which has Audi Drive Select, can be put into "dynamic" mode and that makes the steering more responsive and the dampers more firm and the transmission shift at higher speeds. It has 19" wheels with Ultra High Performance Yoko S.Advan (?) all-season tires (35% aspect ratio). It has rear wheel drive biased quattro ... Read More

I wonder why you test drove the Acura TSX but not the Acura TL. I am no expert in this field, but it seems to me the TL probably compares "better" to an Audi A4, BMW 3, Cadillac CTS and Infiniti G (etc, etc). After having owned 29 Audis, I sent emails to dealers requesting quotes on an Acura TL "advance" AWD, an Audi A4 Prestige with sport package, an Infiniti ... Read More

I don't dislike BMWs at all but you made it sound like one should automatically get a BMW if similar in price. I simply pointed out that some people(especially asking a question on an Acura TL forum) prefer Acura to BMW given equal priice. The problem is a new BMW basic 5 series with automatic trans is $12k more than the TL. So if used prices are similar that kind of ... Read More

Sorry this message got cut while posting. There are ways to estimate it. You can consider depreciation, amount charged by Acura per mile if you exceed their lease limit, amount paid by dealer if you go to them to sell your car. 20 cents is a very low number IMHO. You may argue that it should be 30 cents. Final value will depend on prices in your area.

My friend got a BMW 528i 2008 premium package no navigation, 13000 miles for $32,150 + TTL. I am in market for a car, either ACURA or a BMW. Space wise both are comparable. So my inputs are based on real experience. I agree that choice of car is subject to personal preference. I liked Acura, but my kids like BMW (as it has more show-off value ;) ).

Thanks to all who responded. After pondering long and hard, I have decided to look for a new 2010 car instead or a used 2009 but with less miles and reasonable prices. I am not in a rush to get a car, so I am hoping that there would be a better deal ahead.

Just curious, how did you come up with that .40/mile number? Even though the BMW is smaller, even a left over 328i, stripped (i.e. not even xDrive) will cost more than $30K, and be next to impossible to find. While it's rare, I have seen some used '09 TL SH AWDs w/tech on the lots. OF course, fewer miles, but they're asking just under retail for them (around $39K). They're also ... Read More

In my opinion it is a very steep price. You have practically only one year left on this vehicle's warranty. You are getting a discount of $0.21 per mile. You should expect at least $0.40 depreciation per mile. In my opinion cost of this car should not be more than $26000. You ay be able to get a BMW in same $30K price range.

Now that you mentioned your driving/ownership pattern, I think buying a brand new car may actually make sense. As you have found out, new TL SH-AWD with Tech can be had for around $37k to $37.5k. It may go another $1k or so lower in July or August as the 2011's start to arrive showrooms. Since you will be getting $6k to $7k off sticker to begin with, your 3-year, 36k ... Read More

NO need to worry about longevity. TLs will last a very long time, and pile up a lot of mileage with little more than routine maintenance. I would get the vin# of this TL and take it to an Acura service dept at a dealership and ask them to look up the service history. Acura's really good about having records of the services done to their cars while at the dealership ... Read More

Something to consider. Even though it seems like a lot of miles it may not be. A 2009 TL may have been put in service by the exec in fall of 2008 so that's almost two years when you think about it. To put 16k on a year or so it was probably a lot of expressway miles to and from work which are pretty easy miles...not much tranny shifting or ... Read More

The 2009 and 2010 are practically identical, and IMO $7,000 is a fair trade off for the 32,500 miles on the odometer. But, then there is this invaluable "brand new car" sentiment. At the end of the day, the real question is would you rather have $7,000 in your bank or a brand spanking new car in your garage. And that is something only you can answer.

IMHO, 32,500 miles is way too high mileage for a 2009 car. I guess that is why the price is so low! I think it will be truly attractive if they will make it a Pre-owned, Certified car. Otherwise, I am a little bothered by the high mileage.... mind you, the price is really good though! Can you live with the high mileage? How much do you drive per year? Will ... Read More
